Flexibits teases Fantastical 2 for Mac’s arrival on March 25

Fantastical for Mac 2 teaser

Fantastical is one of the more popular calendar apps for both the Mac, and the iPhone (which was made available in 2012).

And now, Flexibits, the developers behind the popular app, have taken to Twitter to tease that Fantastical 2 for Mac will arrive on Wednesday, March 25. The developers say that, on that date, they’ll “reinvent Fantastical itself.” The iconography in the above image, from the Fantastical 2 for Mac tease, reveals an obvious OS X Yosemite aesthetic’s approach, so it will be interesting to see how the app looks, and just what type of functionality the developers inject into it.

Do you use Fantastical for your Mac and/or iOS device?

Google+ Brings Embedded Posts to Publishers (Just Like Twitter and Facebook)

    google_googleplus

In an effort to expand the reach of its social network, Google on Monday announced that third-party publishers can now embed Google+ posts into their websites.

Simply put: A site like AllThingsD could grab a publicly-made Google+ status update and, with the addition of a snippet of code, display it in a story.

At this point among the major players in social, it's a table stakes move. Twitter has long had embeds available, pitching the feature heavily to news sites and consumer outlets. And now both Facebook - which has made strides to surface more public-facing activity as of late - and Instagram have done the same. Google+ is a natural addition.

It's certainly a sensible move for all three companies, each of which aims for broad consumer recognition and appeal. It's also a trojan horse for potential new user signups if readers click through to the original social site.

Still, part of me wonders if there's a "peak embed" point. That is to say, if users will grow confused at the multiple types of embedded posts, and thereby not be inspired to click through. Or perhaps the different types of embedded posts will run together, and no one network will stand out.

Embeds should be available to publishers beginning today, with instructions on how to make it work found here.

"Just a Reflektor" Brings You and a Smartphone Into Arcade Fire's Latest Video

The band Arcade Fire has come out with another interactive music video designed to inspire and provoke, push the limits of Web technology, and make your laptop fan work in overdrive.

    ArcadeFireReflektor

"Just a Reflektor" combines a Web browser, webcam and smartphone to include the viewer's point of view in the video, with the phone (or mouse) used to control what's illuminated. It's a neat way to make the experience of the video more visceral.

Like the band's "The Wilderness Downtown" before it, "Reflektor" was made using Google technology, specifically the Chrome browser, which it requires.

The short film was written, directed and produced by frequent Arcade Fire collaborator Vincent Morisset, and filmed in Haiti. Credits include the Google Creative Lab, the company's internal imaginative product marketing agency, and UNIT9.

On a tech explainer page that breaks down the various effects used in the video, the band highlights technology including the JavaScript Library three.js, WebSockets and the open-source TailBone project.

"Just a Reflektor" is also open source.

Still Playing Catch-Up on Mobile, Intel Takes Aim at Wearables

Despite having a tough time getting its chips into phones and tablets, Intel is setting its sights on not only doing better than that market, but also on getting its chips into even lower-power devices.

Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 9.55.40 PM

At its developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, Intel revealed its smallest-ever chip, known as Quark, designed to go into wearable computers and even products that are swallowed or disposable.

"We want to participate in all segments of computing," Intel's Renee James said on Monday. "We really mean everywhere."

The Quark chips, now sampling, are aimed at a wide range of everyday objects that are expected to gain Internet connections in the coming years. Products using Quark will hit the market next year, James said, adding that the chip is five times smaller than today's Atom processors, and 10 times as power-efficient.

But even as it eyes this new market, Intel is still playing catch-up in the market for phones and tablets - a market dominated by Qualcomm and a host of less well-known competitors including MediaTek and others. However, James said, Intel is making progress in both phones and tablets.

On the tablet side, Intel said that device makers are ready with the first products based on Bay Trail, a new version of its Atom processor based on a new generation of manufacturing technology and designed from the ground up to run on both Windows and Android devices. At one point, Intel had planned Bay Trail for a 2014 introduction, but the company decided that it could not afford to wait that long.

Intel has been placing special emphasis on developing expertise around Android, with James noting that the team devoted to that operating system is now equal to the one focused on Android. On the phone side, Intel is expected to showcase new designs from existing partners such as Lenovo, as well as some from newly acquired customers.

The chipmaker will also use the developer conference to show the first machines running chips (code-named Broad Trail) from Intel's next-generation 14-nanometer process. In addition, Intel is announcing a previously undisclosed version of its Haswell chip that can deliver the same performance as today's Core i5 processors and yet run in low-power machines without a fan.

As Congress Dawdles, the World Steals Our Talent

On immigration reform, this has been a slow summer for Congress. After reform passed the Senate in June, it languished in July. While Washington then went on recess, and now has shifted its focus to Syria, what has the rest of the world been up to on economic advancement?

Germany spent the summer rewriting 40 percent of its immigration laws, significantly easing the bureaucratic hurdles impeding talented, foreign-born engineers and professionals from contributing to the economy there. It will now be easier than ever for U.S.-educated graduate students to start new businesses ... in Germany.

Why the University of Washington Wants Its Surgeons to Play Videogames

    nintendo_surgeon

    Randall Munroe / xkcd.com

In 1999, an Institute of Medicine study found that as many as 98,000 people die every year as the result of medical error in the U.S., incurring some $17 billion to $29 billion in hospital expenses. In 2009, the Safe Patient Project concluded that the situation may have gotten even worse in the decade that followed.

That's a tragedy, which Dr. Andy Wright - a surgeon and one of the core faculty members at the Institute for Simulation and Interprofessional Studies (ISIS), a health-care education program based at the University of Washington - thinks can be helped by playing videogames.

Wright isn't advocating for surgeons' entertainment, although he personally identifies as a gamer.

"Being a videogamer doesn't get a lot of respect in a lot of mainstream professions," he said at the gaming conference PAX last month. "But, it has been instrumental to me in becoming a surgeon."

Wright's specialty is laparoscopy, meaning that his surgeries require very small incisions, some less than a centimeter long, which may be more easily monitored from a TV screen than by looking directly at the surgical site. His panel at PAX, "Videogames in Medicine," argued that the skills developed by games, such as hand-eye coordination and deliberate practice and teamwork, are also conducive to success in the operating room.

"Running a World of Warcraft guild doing raids is not terribly bad preparation for working in a hospital," Wright said in the panel discussion, noting that between two-thirds and three-quarters of those medical-error deaths were the result of miscommunication. As an example of what not to do, he played this infamous clip of the World of Warcraft guild Pals For Life, seemingly falling apart:

On a more down-to-earth level, Wright discussed how virtual training "games" like the Surgical Science product LapSim can help surgeon trainees. Although every patient is different, simulating surgeries allows students the chance to fail and get feedback without endangering anyone's life. Plus, simulators can easily throw those students into experiences that they might only see once in their entire careers, in order to prepare them for unlikely circumstances.

There's some data to back this up. In a study conducted in 2002, surgical residents trained in a virtual-reality simulation of gallbladder dissection were six times less likely to make an error in the real world than a control group that only received standard training.

However, a review of academic literature on virtual-reality training published in 2010 raised two caveats: VR makes the biggest difference with simpler skills being learned by less-practiced surgeons, and manual surgical technique is just one of the competencies that it takes to become a good surgeon, with good clinical outcomes strongly influenced by interpersonal communication skills and good judgment.

So, can normal videogames - the ones not intended for medical training - help with those non-manual skills?

"Absolutely," Wright told AllThingsD via email. "This is an area where I haven't seen any research on the application of videogames in that context, but the skills are the same," he said. "We teach judgment, team management, communication skills, conflict resolution, and error disclosure in the sim lab. You could easily see training those in a virtual environment or through gaming."

Zuckerberg to Meet With Top House Republicans on Immigration Reform

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the Facebook Home launch event.

Mr. Zuckerberg is headed back to Washington.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to meet with four top House Republicans later this week, another in a string of moves into the political realm for the social giant.

The meeting, first reported by Politico, will include sitting Speaker of the House John Boehner, as well as other top Republican House leadership, with Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Whip Kevin McCarthy and Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

"Mark is coming to Washington to discuss issues important to the knowledge economy, including immigration reform," a Facebook spokesperson told AllThingsD.

Ostensibly that includes Zuckerberg's efforts with FWD.us, the political action group founded in conjunction with a host of tech executives that aims to upend U.S. immigration policy and potentially increase the number of foreign-born tech workers allowed entry into the United States.

The meeting is set to occur in Washington this Thursday.

    Pandora Media Names New CEO

Pandora Media Inc. named Brian McAndrews, a former aQuantive and Microsoft Corp. executive, as its new chief executive and chairman, a move that comes six months after Joe Kennedy said he would be stepping down from the Internet-radio company's helm.

Shares jumped 2.8 percent to $21.99 after hours Wednesday.

McAndrews's appointment is effective immediately. Pandora said that in the search for a new CEO the board had sought a candidate who could build on the company's leading position in Internet radio and accelerate its fast-growing advertising business.

Chair Entertainment Founder: "I Cannot Wait" for Physical Controllers for iPhones

    mustard ib3

At Apple's iPhone 5c/5s event on Tuesday, Chair Entertainment co-founder and creative director Donald Mustard debuted Infinity Blade 3, the newest game in the popular iOS sword-fighting series. Naturally, he's making the rounds this week to talk about the new game and how it takes advantage of the iPhone's hardware ... but that's not stopping him from hinting at more to come.

Mustard characterized Infinity Blade 3 as a "statement" of the power of touchscreen design, saying the series "spawned a whole new genre of game." However, absent from the iPhone event this week was an update on how iOS 7 will support physical game controller peripherals, one of the features mentioned at this year's WWDC keynote.

Mustard said he's excited for that eventuality.

"I cannot wait for the day when we can make a mobile game that's supported by a more traditional controller," he said.

He said fans have asked him when Chair would make a touchscreen version of one of its pre-Infinity Blade games, Shadow Complex. The answer: never!

"Shadow Complex wouldn't be good with touchscreen controls," Mustard said, adding that Infinity Blade would not work as well on Xbox. If Chair makes a mobile game for a physical controller peripheral, he said, it "would want to design the experience from the ground up."

It would also be possible to have a mobile game that combines both forms of control, he mused.

In the meantime, though, Infinity Blade 3 at least looked good in Mustard's demo. The battle he showed off on the iPhone 5s featured an imposing and smoothly animated dragon, which was far larger than the game series' previous bosses. Although the dragon will look best on the 5s, it and other animations in the game will still look "awesome" on the iPhone 4, Mustard said, calling the latter device "still pretty damn powerful."

IB3 will cost $6.99 when it goes on sale for iOS devices on Sept. 20, timed to the launch of the 5c and 5s.

Attention, San Francisco: Uber Is Chauffeuring the Tamale Lady Tonight to Deliver Free Tamales On Demand

While AllThingsD generally abstains from writing about Uber's myriad food delivery stunts, here's a fun one that may concern our readers who happen to be out enjoying the mild San Francisco weather tonight.

    tamale_lady.jog_

In hyper-hyperlocal news, ride-hailing service Uber is underwriting free on-demand tamales from San Francisco's famous Tamale Lady, Virginia Ramos, this evening.

Ramos will be chauffeured around town in an UberSUV, delivering tamales and hugs to anyone who can get through to make the request from the Mission and the Lower Haight neighborhoods.

A San Francisco institution and a friendly and recognizable face to many who enjoy the city's nightlife, Ramos was blocked in June from selling her tamales to hipsters and hippies and everyone else in San Francisco because she had been cooking them in an unlicensed kitchen.

Prior to that, she had been pushing her cart from bar to bar for some 20 years, selling homemade late-night snacks for $4, inspiring bumper stickers and nearly 350 Yelp reviews.

    Ubertamale

Now Ramos is trying to open a brick-and-mortar tamale shop, and has launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $50,000.

The tamales start at 8 pm PT tonight and go till they run out. Uber warns, "There's only one Virginia, so if you see a grayed-out icon and can't get tamales right away, please keep trying."

Here Is Airbnb's First Television Ad

The peer-to-peer accommodation marketplace Airbnb ran its first television advertisement this week, and it wasn't your average 30-second spot. Instead, it was an allegorical short film that aired on the Sundance Channel Thursday night. How much did that slot cost? Nothing.

"Hollywood & Vines" is a four-and-a-half-minute piece about the life and aspirations of paper airplanes, composed entirely of six-second clips made with the Twitter-owned mobile app Vine.

Each short, postage-stamp-sized scene was submitted in response to an individual tweet from Airbnb, like "A paper airplane falls straight down onto a sidewalk. 2 seconds later a hand carries the plane away," or, "A piece of paper is thrown into a spinning world with other paper products. Darkness!" The company and its partners Mullen SF and B-Reel Productions got more than 750 submissions.

"It's an initiative to bring our global community together to create something meaningful and relevant to Airbnb's brand," said Airbnb spokeswoman Emily Joffrion, who added that the company is planning a set of accompanying events in Los Angeles. "The plot is about learning your place in the world through travel experiences."

Joffrion said Airbnb pitched the film to Sundance, and the channel understood it as more of a creative effort than an ad.

The final result is more than a little quirky, and it's definitely not an in-your-face advertisement for Airbnb. At all:

HTC Confirms Job Cuts at U.S. Operations

Struggling Taiwanese phone maker HTC cut more than two dozen jobs at its U.S. offices on Friday.

    HTC-store-taiwan-380x285

The company said in a statement that the cuts were "a decisive action by HTC Corp (US) to streamline and optimize our organization and improve efficiencies after several years of aggressive growth."

HTC didn't offer details on the cuts or provide a specific number, but a source familiar with the situation said that about 30 positions were eliminated. No executives left, nor was there any significant shift in the types or amount of work being done in the U.S., according to an HTC representative.

"This is a hard decision that has direct impact on people who have contributed to the growth HTC has experienced the past several years," HTC said in its statement. "However, to achieve our long-term goals as a business and return maximum value to our shareholders, this is a necessary step to drive ongoing innovation."

After several years of strong growth, HTC has been trying to rebound from what has been a steep dropoff in sales of its smartphones. The company has also faced some turmoil at the corporate level, including the departure of several top executives.

As part of the turnaround push, HTC recently launched a new ad campaign starring Robert Downey Jr.

The job cuts were reported earlier by The Verge.

Barack Obama on Jimmy Kimmel Live: 'In Kenya we drive on the other side'

'Kenyan-born Muslim socialist president' holds his own against comedy host but strikes serious note about 'criminals' who shot police in Ferguson

President Barack Obama made an appearance on the late-night comedy show Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday, gamely subjecting himself to jokes about getting high, going gray and hailing from Kenya.

It was a long interview - the better part of 40 minutes, with three commercial breaks - and the president delivered the goods, rapping about Area 51, Hillary Clinton's email, dentistry, midnight snacking in the White House, Kanye West and the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which stars, of course, the guest who followed Obama, Penn.

The Fujifilm Instax 210 – Polaroids are a thing of the past, right?

    FujiFilm Instax 210

We are a culture that loves taking photos of ourselves and immediately looking at them. Some have argued over whether or not selfies are the pinnacle of vanity, but others say that it's rather mild compared to having someone come into your home and paint you in a positive light surrounded by your belongings for massive amounts of money. You know, like they did in the old days.

Of course, some really do love that aspect of photo collage, but not in the sense that you can see everything you've ever posted on Instagram. They want real, solid copies of their snapshot memories, and Polaroids are hard to come by nowadays. If you want a camera that can print instantly, then the Fujufilm Instax 210 can do the trick. This will give you 2 x 3 " color photos in about 20 seconds time after you've taken a picture.

This has an auto-retracting lens, automatic exposure control, and a built-in auto flash. There is an optical viewfinder, LCD control panel and motorized film advance, but you will need 4 AA batteries for this to work. There's even a snap-on lens with a mirror so you can take selfies! This is going to cost you $149.95, which isn't much better than getting an actual Polaroid. Of course, you're going to have to keep buying batteries and paper to be able to keep using this, so that price is going to slowly climb up the more you use it. However, there are more modern options to choose from which may be a better fit for present day usage.

The S.U.R.F.r Wireless Multimedia and Game Controller – control all the things!

    SURFR

We really do love the idea of a universal remote, but just when you think you find one that might be up to snuff with your standards, something better comes along. That's just the nature of technology really, but we can't help but try and keep up with current trends. While the idea of a universal remote is quite swell, it all comes down to whether or not it can control the things you actually care about. If you are addicted to social media, gaming, and watching TV through online sources, then you'll want something that can accommodate.

While this remote we saw before was rather impressive with its touchscreen and minimal design with the bare minimum of buttons, it doesn't quite lend itself much to gaming. The MadCatz S.U.R.F.r is a gaming controller and multimedia remote that will connect to TVs that run Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, M.O.J.O. micro console, and basically anything Android-powered.

This will give you a full QWERTY keyboard, two analog sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, bumpers, and an ergonomic grip. This will let you search and type with ease, or click with precision through the mouse mode cursor. This only recently debuted at the MobileFocus Global 2015 in Barcelona, but can be pre-ordered now for $79.99. This will ship in May of this year, and comes in black, red, or white.

    Available for preorder om Madcatz

Cucumber Infuser Water Bottle helps cool you down on a sweltering afternoon

    cucumber-infuser-bottle

"Cool as a cucumber", or so the saying goes. Well, just in case you were wondering what you are able to do in order to combat the sweltering heat whenever summer approaches (or if you already live in the tropics), then a refreshing cup of cucumber juice is definitely more than welcome - add in a dash of pineapple or lime, and you've got quite the winning combination there. How about having a bit of cucumber goodness to go along with your regular drinking water bottle? This can be achieved thanks to the $19.99 Cucumber Infuser Water Bottle.

The Cucumber Infuser Water Bottle is definitely handy enough to carry around with you, where it sports a really sturdy lid and is made from silicone and BPA-free plastic. Apart from that, it has another advantage, would be to have it feature a built-in slicer which will be able to add spiral-cut cucumber in a jiffy to your water sans knives or other kinds of specialized kitchen tools. In addition, studies shown that infused water would help encourage folks to remain more hydrated, but cucumbers have an added advantage by delivering a slew of antioxidants, vitamin K, and electrolytes, among others. All that you need to do is to twist the cucumber into the opening, in a pencil sharpener-style no less, and you're good and ready to go.

The Podo scoffs at the Selfie Stick by making a stick and shoot camera

    Podo Camera

Human beings have always been interested in depicting themselves. We've made statues, paintings, drawings, and every other variant of an artistic medium you can think of. It comes as no surprise that when everyone got cameras on their phone that hundred of millions of photos of peoples faces began cropping up. This gave rise to the one and only selfie, however, how we now take these images is changing.

If you go to any sort of tourist area, you have undoubtedly seen the Selfie Stick. This is an extending arm that you can slip your phone into and take a better picture of your face or have your camera far enough away to include a large amount of friends in the frame. There are also shutter remotes so you can set your phone down far away and click a button that will snap the photo wirelessly. The Podo is next up for selfie taking methods, as it is a stick and shoot camera that you can put literally anywhere, and your phone will act as a shutter remote.

This will prevent you from having to leave your phone sitting vulnerable or precariously somewhere far away from you. Not only that, but it will let you take even more creative photos through your phone as it's not just limited to your arm length or that of a Selfie Stick. Its internal 600mAh battery can last for up to 2 hours of video, and it has internal storage of 4GB if you don't want it to save only on your phone. Of course, if you use the LEDs for the flash too often the power will drain faster. It can take 8MP photos, 720p video, and doesn't need any wires to work. If you want one of these for your very own, you can get it in blue or red for $89.

Available for crowdfunding and more information on Kickstarter

Windows Phone 7 gets its Kik, too

It would seem Kik, everybody's almost favorite free messaging service - except those on a BlackBerry, perhaps - has added Windows Phone 7 to its list of supported platforms. What's Kik you ask? Well, in case you've been hiding under a rock, Kik's an instant messaging app with BBM-like features such as message status which lets you know if your message has been read, received, or if whomever you messaged is typing back. Throw in photo sharing and the fact that it is free, and well, you get the idea. While any mobile messaging app of this sort requires some selling on the part of the early adopters we'd guess by the uptake on both Android and iOS that Kik will quickly become a pretty hot property on the Windows Marketplace. So tell us, are you as hip and cool as Jon and Jessica and "down" with this type of service? Feel free to let us know in the comments below.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V gets reviewed, deemed one of the best super-zooms around

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V been available for a little while now, but it's flown somewhat under the radar when it comes to in-depth reviews. Photography Blog's now chimed in with its take on the camera, however, which is not only thorough but effusive in its praise. According to the site, the HX100V is simply one of the best super-zoom cameras they've tested (30X, in this case), with it delivering some excellent still images and best-in-class 1080p video, along with some welcome added touches including an intuitive focus / zoom ring and built-in GPS (although the latter will lead to a 25 percent hit in battery life if you leave it on all the time). Some of the few drawbacks are a lack of a RAW shooting mode, and an LCD that folds out but doesn't rotate, but the site says those are pretty easy to forgive considering everything else you get for the $400 or so asking price. Visit the Photography Blog for full review.

AOL Radio set for relaunch in partnership with Slacker

AOL is teaming-up with Slacker to relaunch its AOL Radio app/service in late summer. The revamped service will offer "an enhanced radio experience" with fewer ads, new personalization features and premium subscription offerings. AOL's 250 expert-programmed original music stations will remain on place alongside Slacker programming including stations and content from ESPN Radio and ABC News Radio.

That Slacker-powered "part" of the service will provide access to ad-free radio, enabling users to create tailored radio stations, save favorite songs and stations, read album reviews, access artist bios, review station histories, increase song skipping capabilities and much more, depending on the tier of service selected.

Slacker on it end will reach a larger audience, while making an extra money from new advertising opportunities.

Initially, AOL Radio will be launched for iPhone users with Android and other platforms to follow shortly. For the record, the existing AOL Radio iOS app has been downloaded by more than 3 million users.

    Shift away from landlines continues

Everyone I know has a mobile phone of some sort. Even my grandmother and mom have one, even though they rarely answer the phones. When it comes to the segment of the population most likely to have and use smartphones it's the younger and tech savvy that are most often leaving the landline behind for mobile phones only. The latest FCC wireless communications report has been published and sheds a bit of light on the number of users leaving landlines behind.

Right now 24.9% of all Americans have no landline phone and use a wireless phone exclusively. I have been in this group for nearly seven years now and haven't missed a landline yet. Among the younger users 25 to 29 years old, the percentage of users with wireless phones only is nearly twice the US average. This is the most impressive number from the report. The US has 308 million people living in the country and 274 million of that number are subscribed to a wireless plan.

I would love to know the percentage of young children in the population today. It would be very interesting to know how many of the roughly 29 million US residents not on wireless are the very young or the very old who aren't able to use a mobile phone. Out of the 274 million subscribers, 55.8 million have a mobile data plan likely to mean they use a smartphone. The report shows AT&T and Verizon lead the wireless market.

Google Videos Application for Android Coming Soon?

Google announced its movie service at GoogleIO where the company and its service would allow for rentals through the Android Market. El Goog also promised device support and it appears that a Google Videos application has surfaced on the Android Market just to be quickly yanked.

The application was available for a short time in the Android Market but those who were lucky enough to grab it report that "it doesn't work on phones yet". While its appearance in the Market is a pretty solid indication of things to come there is no certain information about an availability date. Check out the video of the app in action below:

Windows Phone 7 Mango Shown Off on HTC HD2 (Video)

We know that Windows Phone 7 Mango has been hacked over to the evergreen HTC HD2 and we even hope to see a public release sometime soon (probably even today) but until then there are a couple of videos to get you through the waiting.

Yes, Windows Phone 7 Mango is working on the HD2 even if there are currently some things that do not, like the Marketplace, search or HTML 5 rendering in Internet Explorer. Other than that, just take a look at the two demo videos below to see how the beloved Leo is handling Redmond's upcoming greatest:

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo gives you great photos every time thanks to its high-quality 8.1-megapixel camera. And when you want to talk face to face in a video call, there's a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The main camera lets you take advantage of face recognition, so everyone in the picture is in focus. There's also Exmor R technology, which is great for photos in even the lowest light. You won't find these features on the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY.

Google+ for iPhone coming within days

Dedicated iOS app on the way

Google's Google+ for iPhone app should be landing in the App Store within the next 2 weeks according to the big G, after confirming that it has submitted the app to Apple for approval.

The new app, which only works for those who have access to the new closed beta service, promises to give Google+ users the chance to catch up on their new found friends and the social network from a dedicated app rather than just the mobile website currently available.

Googler Erica Joy made it very clear in a post on Google+:

"For my iPhone using friends: the Google+ iPhone app has been submitted to the App store (no not today, sometime prior to today) and is awaiting approval."

Of course there is no guarantee that Apple will approve the app as is. Many question whether or not the Cupertino-based company will allow the app to upload photos in the background, something no other app to our knowledge does.

The Android version of the Google+ app gives you full control over the new social network as well as offering other features like automatically adding people to your Contacts book and letting you "Huddle", two other features that might not make it to the iOS version.

Are you looking forward to the iPhone app? Let us know.

NodeBeat HD Helps Turn Anyone into an iPad Musician

    NodeBeat 5

Since the existence of computers, developers have been working on ways to make music that is compatible with technology. Combining the digital world with the musical world has opened up many new opportunities. One of them being the ability to create beautiful music without needing to know how to play a single note on an instrument.

NodeBeat HD is one such app that allows users the ability to control and manipulate objects on the screen that will pulse rhythmically and change pitch as you move them around. No music theory necessary.

    NodeBeat 4

    NodeBeat 3

The nodes are made up of various notes and beat generators. Place a node on the screen and the notes will automatically appear, attached to the node. Stretch the note out to alter its pitch. Move it around to create different sounds or let the notes float around and create sound automatically. Add more notes and attach them to the node to create new rhythms.

    NodeBeat 2

    NodeBeat 1

Each note you place on the screen can be adjusted with different waveforms, keys, and octaves. You can also change the echo, attack, decay, and release. There are 12 musical key signatures with 20 scales and seven octave ranges. For the nodes, adjust the tempo and beat style for a variety of sound options.

You can record and save your music, create ringtones, upload to SoundCloud, and play it live to other compatible apps via Audiobus.

NodeBeat HD is available on the iPad for $2.99. Download it in the App Store today.
