Why the University of Washington Wants Its Surgeons to Play Videogames

In 1999, an Institute of Medicine study found that as many as 98,000 people die every year as the result of medical error in the U.S., incurring some $17 billion to $29 billion in hospital expenses. In 2009, the Safe Patient Project concluded that the situation may have gotten even worse in the decade that followed.



That's a tragedy, which Dr. Andy Wright - a surgeon and one of the core faculty members at the Institute for Simulation and Interprofessional Studies (ISIS), a health-care education program based at the University of Washington - thinks can be helped by playing videogames.



Wright isn't advocating for surgeons' entertainment, although he personally identifies as a gamer.



"Being a videogamer doesn't get a lot of respect in a lot of mainstream professions," he said at the gaming conference PAX last month. "But, it has been instrumental to me in becoming a surgeon."



Wright's specialty is laparoscopy, meaning that his surgeries require very small incisions, some less than a centimeter long, which may be more easily monitored from a TV screen than by looking directly at the surgical site. His panel at PAX, "Videogames in Medicine," argued that the skills developed by games, such as hand-eye coordination and deliberate practice and teamwork, are also conducive to success in the operating room.



"Running a World of Warcraft guild doing raids is not terribly bad preparation for working in a hospital," Wright said in the panel discussion, noting that between two-thirds and three-quarters of those medical-error deaths were the result of miscommunication. As an example of what not to do, he played this infamous clip of the World of Warcraft guild Pals For Life, seemingly falling apart:







On a more down-to-earth level, Wright discussed how virtual training "games" like the Surgical Science product LapSim can help surgeon trainees. Although every patient is different, simulating surgeries allows students the chance to fail and get feedback without endangering anyone's life. Plus, simulators can easily throw those students into experiences that they might only see once in their entire careers, in order to prepare them for unlikely circumstances.



There's some data to back this up. In a study conducted in 2002, surgical residents trained in a virtual-reality simulation of gallbladder dissection were six times less likely to make an error in the real world than a control group that only received standard training.



However, a review of academic literature on virtual-reality training published in 2010 raised two caveats: VR makes the biggest difference with simpler skills being learned by less-practiced surgeons, and manual surgical technique is just one of the competencies that it takes to become a good surgeon, with good clinical outcomes strongly influenced by interpersonal communication skills and good judgment.



So, can normal videogames - the ones not intended for medical training - help with those non-manual skills?



"Absolutely," Wright told AllThingsD via email. "This is an area where I haven't seen any research on the application of videogames in that context, but the skills are the same," he said. "We teach judgment, team management, communication skills, conflict resolution, and error disclosure in the sim lab. You could easily see training those in a virtual environment or through gaming."

L.A. Unified School District Wants iPads for All 640,000 Students

Back in June, the Los Angeles Unified School District awarded Apple a $30 million contract to provide its students with iPads. Under its terms, the company will supply about 31,000 iPads to 47 LAUSD schools, each preloaded with a bunch of educational software. But evidently that's just the first phase of the program.



According to an LAUSD representative, the nation's second-largest school district hopes to provide iPads to all 640,000 students by late 2014. Which means it's going to buy a few hundred thousand more iPads over the next year - though it's not yet sure how it's going to do it. "We're hoping that we will get a lot of private donors," Mark Hovatter, chief facilities executive for LAUSD, told CITEworld.



That's very good news for Apple. If LAUSD is able to pull together the money to realize this plan, it will be purchasing hundreds of thousands of additional iPads. Which potentially means another big iPad contract in the offing, and the chance to expose thousands of kids to the iOS ecosystem.

Analysis begins by examining an object or idea and identifying it's components, defining the relationships between them, and specifying the organizing principle(s) of the whole. Action words associated with analysis include;

  • Discriminate
  • Illustrate
  • Infer
  • Outline
  • Point out
  • Relate
  • Select
  • Separate
  • Subdivide
  • Utilize

Let's consider a familiar object to better understand the process.

We have all used a personal computer at some point in time. We are essentially familiar with how they work. We know the keyboard is the primary input device and the video screen is the primary output device. We understand that instructions and data exist in memory during processing and are often stored on some type of disk for later use. We know processing is performed by the CPU (Central Processing Unit. Thus we understand the general components of a computer; input, output, memory, processing, and storage. But this is just a beginning of understanding how computers work!



What key relationships exist between components? For instance, how does data input at the keyboard get into memory? 



Are there other components yet to be discovered? Can we explain the role of the keyboard buffer? 



What are the organizing principles of a general purpose computer? In other words, what purpose does this machine serve that we are interested in using it?



This is analysis!



Analysis is a mental process we must participate in to achieve understanding but there are some tasks software can do to help. One way is to document our thoughts.

Students can keep notes using Apple Notes



Find a good article? Quickly jot down the citation data so you can find it again. You can even capture quotes for paper and presentations.  



Are you inspired by an innovative idea? Write down before you forget it.   



I use Notes to keep song lyrics handy and to write my blog.



Find an interesting artifact? Take a picture with Apple Camera and it is automatically stored in Photos. You can also make videos!



Synching is an added bonus. No matter which device (iPhone or iPad) I pick up my files are there.



Explore using these apps for analysis. You may find them adequate for your needs. If not, try Apple iWorks more powerful productivity tools. It consists of Pages for word processing, Keynote for presentation graphics, and Numbers for spreadsheeting. 



Your students probably know how to use these tools already so you can set them free to work on a project.

You can read Michael Bloomberg's endorsement of President Obama for re-election in the online version of the Bloomberg View (11/1/2012). New York City's Mayor is a serious person with real responsbilities. He doesn't have the time to court fools for votes. That's why he siding with science as we all should.



We should all be students of science and act upon what we learn but we should help others understand too.



Climate Science is one of the most misunderstood areas of scientific knowledge due to the outrageous acts of fanatics and spineless politicians who strive to compound the confusion. What's a reasonable person to do?

Flipping Tip: Use Podcasts to Manage Absences

Use podcasts to manage absences.


There are valid reasons for absenteeism. I know because I missed most of my freshman year at Benton Harbor High School due to a severe illness. I worked hard to keep up but I was studying on my own.



I nearly passed all my courses too! I would have if only I could have had 5 minutes of instruction per day from my teachers. Unfortunately there were no podcasts or iPhones back in 1967 but there are now.

It doesn't take a lot of effort to make a simple podcast but it can make a significant difference to a student with a desire to learn.

Take a few moments out of each day to record the day's salient points. You can easily make audio podcasts with an iPhone using Voice Memos (free) or GarageBand ($4.95). Or you can make video podcasts using iMovie ($4.95). Its not difficult. 

Keep your popdcasts short and focused on key point(s). You'll be surprised how much you can cover in five minutes! Then email the podcast to the class or post it on your class web page.

 Audio and video podcasts are HTML5 compatible which means they'll play on any computer or mobile device. That's a good ting!



Audio and video podcasts use the MP3 and MP4 file formats respectively. Whenever presented a choice remember to pick one of these. 

I know you want to help your absent students keep pace. They will appreciate your effort and you'll spend less time getting them up to speed when they return.

The whole class will appreciate reviewing your podcasts after hours and studying them for exams. So will parents!
