Google said to unveil $99 Nexus 7 tablet this year, say sources

“Google is reportedly making two new versions of the Nexus 7 that are expected to be thinner, and will use TN panels made by Taiwan-based panel maker HannStar Display, according to industry sources,” Julian Ho and Alex Wolfgram report for DigiTimes.

“One of the models will be priced at US$199 while the other will be priced US$99, and both models are expected to hit markets by the end of 2012, added the sources.,” Ho and Wolfgram report. “The sources speculated that Google is preparing for increased competition from Apple when the reported 7.85-inch iPad is released in the fourth quarter of 2012…”

The media turned down Overreaction Road on Apple Maps

“While it has its flaws, the outsized reaction to Apple Maps comes more from media hype and unrealistically high expectations than any severe problem,” Louie Herr writes for Digital Trends. “Like the uproar over "Antenna Gate" in 2010, we'll soon forget all about it.”

“We're used to seeing high-quality experiences from Apple. There is dramatic tension in the idea that Apple may have made a miscue,” Herr writes. “That dramatic tension is also the reason that news coverage of the Maps app has been so thorough… This tension may make for a good story, but it's precisely the reason that we are all overreacting.”

Herr writes, “Maps seems to be the new Antenna Gate, all the way down to drawing a reaction from Apple's CEO. The most recent development in this story, occurring just before my deadline, was Cook's release of a statement that Apple is "extremely sorry for the frustration" that Maps has caused. This is the clearest indicator so far that Apple is aware of the Maps problem and moving to deal with it.”

MacDailyNews Take:

This is no different than “iPod screen scratches,” “Antennagate,” etc. Take a minor issue (or invent one) and then blow it all out of proportion in the media echo chamber in a quixotic attempt to slow down the inevitable record-shattering iPhone 5 sales. These sort of FUD campaigns have been going on after major Apple product releases for years. Antennagate was a two-parter – they actually used it twice! (Nothing smells worse than recycled FUD.)

Just like all the anti-Apple FUD that’s gone before, this won’t work, either. – MacDailyNews Take, September 20, 2012

My iPad Tips eBook Is Now Available in the iBookstore and Amazon Kindle Store

iPad Tips Book

Hurrah. This morning my book of iPad tips was released on the iBookstore and on the Amazon Kindle store. The book is called iPad Insight's Tips – it's available now for $3.99 on both stores and should be released soon on the Barnes and Noble Nook store and a few other eBook outlets.

Many readers have suggested over the last couple of years that I should write a book on iPad tips, so this summer I set out to do that. It's partly a collection of the most popular and most useful tips and how-to's shared on the site, but also contains a lot of new content - including a set of iPad app and accessory recommendations.

Here's the elevator pitch for the book in the Amazon Kindle store:

This book will help you to get the most out of your iPad. If you're a relatively new user it should help you to navigate around the iPad and get more comfortable with using it. If you're a more experienced user it will show you some nifty shortcuts, tips and short guides to some of the more powerful features of the iPad.

I've grouped the how-to articles and tips in this book into eight chapters. The book does not need to be read sequentially – you can peruse the Table of Contents and dive right into chapters or individual articles that interest you most. I also don't think you need to worry about trying to plough through the whole book in just a few reading sessions. Rather, I hope you can first read the sections that will help you out the most right away and then dip back into it to explore more tips and topics whenever they fit into your usage of the iPad. I'd love to think that this book will become a handy resource you'll keep around and refer back to often.

Google, Samsung execs reportedly meeting to talk Apple

“The bosses of Google Inc. and Samsung Electronics reportedly are holding high-level talks in Korea this week, and there's little doubt about the main topic of the conversation - Apple Inc.,” Dan Gallagher reports for MarketWatch.

“Apple won a court victory over Samsung in San Jose, Calif.last month,” Gallagher reports. “The federal court jury found the company infringed on some key Apple patents, and a awarded judgment of more than $1 billion. Sales injunctions are a distinct possibility.”

Gallagher reports, “Samsung is likely interested in how the huge portfolio of wireless patents that Google acquired when it bought Motorola Mobility last year can help its case, given that Apple's main complaints are directed at the software that Google designed.”

Apple’s iPhone 5 may buoy weak U.S. economy this fall

“If the U.S. economy looks a little merrier this December, its Santa Claus will be the iPhone 5,” Tim Mullaney and Jefferson Graham report for USA Today.

“U.S. sales of Apple’s latest must-have gadget could pump more than $3 billion into the economy by year’s end, say some economists and technology analysts,” Mullaney and Graham report. “All told, the iPhone 5 could add a quarter-percentage point to the U.S. economy’s growth in the next three months, says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics.”

Mullaney and Graham report, “Even with the iPhone’s contribution, the U.S. economy is only expected to grow at a weak annual rate of 2% to 2.5% in the October-December period, Zandi says. JPMorgan Chase estimates a 2% growth rate. But it should counter the negative effects of this summer’s drought on consumer spending growth.”

How's your battery life on iOS 6 and iPhone 5?

How's your battery life on the iPhone 5? How's your battery life on iOS 6?

Whether you bought a brand new iPhone 5 or you upgraded an existing device to iOS 6, one of the first concerns everyone has is battery life. Is it better? Is it worse? Is it the same? A new device or new version of iOS typically does more than the last one, and because it's new, we typically use it more, at least in the beginning. Problems with backups, with push, with location services, with apps that don't shut down properly all also seem more common as everyone, from Apple to developers, gets used to the new hardware and software.

I already published my traditional list of battery life trouble shooting tips, so if you're having problems check those out and see if they help.

Then let me know -- how is your battery life on your new iPhone 5, or your newly updated iOS 6 device? Vote up top and give me the details in the comments below!

Apple’s smart Maps maneuver

“It might seem as if Apple chose its iOS 6 release last week to practice the biblical directive to love one’s enemy. For, by ejecting Google Maps from updated iPads and iPhones, Apple hath caused glorious comparisons to shine upon its foe,” Brad Hill writes for Engadget. “If most people were unaware of comparative feature sets and quality aspects that distinguish Google Maps from Apple Maps, every tech-loving person on God’s earth is an expert now.”

“I argue that replacing Google Maps with Apple Maps was shrewd, inevitable and an indicator that Apple understands the true battle it wages,” Hill writes. “By grafting its own Maps product into the nervous system of its mobile OS, Apple accomplishes two important things. First, the company’s primary mobile competitor is exorcised from the main body. This outcome might be viewed as the remedy to an ailment that never should have occurred... Second, Apple positions itself to harvest future local ad revenue. Apple Maps, despite its spatial confusions, has 25 percent more business listings (100 million of them) than Google does.”

Apple buys another 200 acres in North Carolina for 2nd data center solar farm

“California-based technology giant Apple has spent nearly $3 million to buy more than 200 acres of property in Catawba County for another solar farm,” Sharon McBrayer reports for The Hickory Daily Record. “It's another step in Apple's pledge to have its Maiden data center running on 100 percent renewable energy by the end of the year.”

“Apple recently closed on the land purchase that includes a tract of 218.885 acres and another tract of 0.251 acres, according to deeds and a plat book at the Catawba County Register of Deeds,” McBrayer reports. “Apple's website says, ‘A 100-acre, 20-megawatt installation on the same site as our data center will produce 42 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy annually. A 100-acre site located a few miles away will produce another 42 million kWh.’”

McBrayer reports, “The Conover site is the only other property Apple now owns in the area in addition to the main data center campus and solar farm in Maiden. With the two solar farms and a bio-gas-powered 5-megawatt fuel cell installation, it will be the largest non-utility installation in the country, according to Apple. The company expects to generate 124 million kWh a year, which would power the equivalent of 10,874 homes, Apple says on its website.”

Apple responds to complaints about Maps app; Some users adopting alternatives

With the blogosphere buzzing with complaints about Apple's new Maps app in iOS 6, Apple responded with a statement to the website All Things D: "Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service. We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover and Siri integration, and free turn by turn navigation. We launched this new map service knowing that it is a major initiative and we are just getting started with it. We are continuously improving it, and as Maps is a cloud-based solution, the more people use it, the better it will get. We're also working with developers to integrate some of the amazing transit apps in the App Store into iOS Maps. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better."

Meanwhile, there are persistent rumors that Google is developing a Maps app that will be available in the App Store. And in the interim, some of those who aren't satisfied with Apple's new Maps app are switching to alternatives. PCMag.com has posted an article titled "10 Alternatives to Apple iOS 6 Maps for the iPhone 5." Several of the alternatives are free and sound like they're definitely worth exploring, such as Bing, MapQuest, Waze, and Scout by Telenav. PCMag's article offers a brief overview of each app as well as a link to their full review.

T-Mobile offers to unlock iPhones, take customers from Apple-approved carriers

“T-Mobile, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, is pulling a neat trick,” YCharts reports for Forbes.

“In a campaign timed to coincide with the release of the latest iPhone, T-Mobile is inviting people to come in, unlock their iPhones and run those on the T-Mobile network instead,” YCharts reports. “That way, the only carrier that doesn't officially sell the iPhone gets to sell it anyway and avoid paying hefty fees to Apple that are doing damage to profit margins at AT&T, Verizon Wireless, which is majority owned by Verizon, and to a lesser extent Sprint.”

YCharts reports, “If this works, it could solve a big problem for T-Mobile, the defection of customers who want an iPhone. Last February it announced the company lost 700,000 customers. It's been working hard to build out its 4G system to be compatible with the iPhone.”

New iPhone 5 sparks praise, higher target prices for Apple shares

“Apple Inc.’s new slimmed-down iPhone is getting an upbeat reception from Wall Street analysts, who on Thursday raised share-price targets on the company,” Matt Jarzemsky reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“The upbeat reception, which was helped by the company’s plans for quickly getting the new iPhone in customers’ hands, indicates analysts expect further increases in the stock price of the world’s largest company by market capitalization,” Jarzemsky reports. “‘The iPhone 5 launch exceeded our expectations on the specs and the pace of the rollout fronts, and we think there could be further upside to our estimates,’ J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz wrote in a note to clients Thursday.”

Jarzemsky reports, “Mr. Moskowitz reiterated his ‘overweight’ rating on the shares-similar to a recommendation to buy them-and his price target of $770. Some analysts at other firms raised their share-price estimates, with Deutsche Bank boosting its projection to $775 from $650 and Barclays increasing its target to $810 from $750. Shares of Apple hit an all-time closing high of $682.98 Thursday, and are up 66% so far this year, more than four times the gains in the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index.”

Flipping Tip: Use Podcasts to Manage Absences

iMovie opening screen

Use podcasts to manage absences.

There are valid reasons for absenteeism. I know because I missed most of my freshman year at Benton Harbor High School due to a severe illness. I worked hard to keep up but I was studying on my own.

I nearly passed all my courses too! I would have if only I could have had 5 minutes of instruction per day from my teachers. Unfortunately there were no podcasts or iPhones back in 1967 but there are now.

It doesn't take a lot of effort to make a simple podcast but it can make a significant difference to a student with a desire to learn.

Take a few moments out of each day to record the day's salient points. You can easily make audio podcasts with an iPhone using Voice Memos (free) or GarageBand ($4.95). Or you can make video podcasts using iMovie ($4.95). Its not difficult.

Keep your popdcasts short and focused on key point(s). You'll be surprised how much you can cover in five minutes! Then email the podcast to the class or post it on your class web page.

Audio and video podcasts are HTML5 compatible which means they'll play on any computer or mobile device. That's a good ting!

Audio and video podcasts use the MP3 and MP4 file formats respectively. Whenever presented a choice remember to pick one of these.

I know you want to help your absent students keep pace. They will appreciate your effort and you'll spend less time getting them up to speed when they return.

The whole class will appreciate reviewing your podcasts after hours and studying them for exams. So will parents!

To a camera. While video of things related to that news also plays. There will be some upbeat music. Then maybe we’ll try and wrap things up with a joke, but we’re not going to try too hard. Hell, we might not even try at all. Try not to stress out so much. This is 90 Second on The Verge.

Can We Ever Expect Batteries To Last For Seven Days

The working week is, to many of us, a cornerstone of time, as we tend to work our life around the working week with some exceptions such as battery charging! This is one chore that has to be done on a daily basis, in some cases twice daily! So will we ever get to the point where a battery will last for a week on a full charge? If this infographic from Lenovo is anything to go on, we still have a time to go before that happens.

Here is why battery life could be such an important feature in the future;

Most of us only fuel our cars approximately once per week. When can we expect to get the same mileage from our laptops? Imagine charging your laptop once on a Sunday, and having it last a 40-hour work week without ever needing more juice.

iPhone and Apple Take Top Spots on the Latest Millennial Media Report

Apple has again topped the list on Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix Q2 report analyzing the ad impression market share as the leading manufacturer, with the iPhone also taking the top spot as the leading individual mobile device.

Samsung came in second place overall, with 8 of the top 20 mobile phones, and when combined with Apple’s numbers they dominate the market with over 50% of all mobile device impressions. Apple’s devices alone account for over 31% of the ad impressions.

Android did take the lead in operating systems with 46% of the market, but the iOS operating system still accounts for 34% of impressions. Blackberry and Windows were lagging far behind with a combined total market share of less than 20%.

The top three tablets - the iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab and Kindle Fire – also made it onto the Top 20 Mobile Devices list, with iPad taking the top tablet spot. Tablet users do not appear to be opting much for 3G or 4G though as the Millennial also reports 95% of all tablet impressions are over Wi-Fi networks.

Smartphones saw an 8% growth compared to the same quarter last year and now account for 74% of all mobile device impressions. "Mobile devices and operating systems are growing more sophisticated by the day, and consumers are responding by spending less time with traditional media channels and more time with mobile devices like smartphones and tablets," said Jamie Fellows, SVP, Product, Millennial Media.

Gaming and music & entertainment continue to be the leading application categories in the mobile market as they tend to have the most options, but in a surprise move science & technology managed to grab the #3 spot after not even making the top ten last year. Books & reference also saw an upward trend, and weather made a big jump from #9 to #6 on the chart.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD: So what’s the point?

“This weekend, Amazon quickly responded to a huge customer protest about putting ads on the lock and home screens of the new Kindle Fires,” Gene Steinberg reports for TechNightOwl. “Even though the upgraded lineup comes across as a good value as far as price is concerned, it’s understandable buyers would chafe at having to confront ads on a device that’s already meant to serve as a front end to Amazon’s products and services.”

“Well, Amazon relented, with a $15 surcharge to ditch the ads,” Steinberg writes. “All right, I suppose they are to be commended for making a bad situation better.”

MacDailyNews Take: No commendation necessary or deserved. As we wrote yesterday:

here“As they planned to all along. An utterly contrived PR move.”

Steinberg writes, “But, other than price, what does a Kindle Fire offer that would make it a compelling alternative to an Apple iPad or Google Android tablet? That’s a question that’s really hard to answer, unless, of course, your primary need for a tablet is to acquire Amazon content... On the other hand, the new iPad, though heavier to lug around, offers a really good digital reading experience. More to the point, you aren’t tethered to Apple’s iBooks either. You can always install Amazon’s Kindle software, and embrace their eBook ecosystem.”

“What’s more, if your tablet needs extend beyond consuming multimedia content and digital books, you’ll want a rich selection of apps. Amazon doesn’t do very well in that regard, and the Android app repertoire is mostly smartphone-based. Those apps don’t look very well on tablets, which may be one key reason, among many, that Android tablets have not been very successful in the marketplace,” Steinberg writes. “If the existing iPad is a little too large for convenient reading, Apple may offer a solution soon, in the form of a smaller iPad. The rumored 7.85-inch model, allegedly sporting a 4:3 aspect ratio, will deliver far more screen real estate that a widescreen Kindle Fire or Android tablet.”

Could Apple offer iTunes affiliate revenue to carriers as a subsidy for LTE data plans?

Could Apple offer carriers iTunes affiliate revenue to subsidize LTE data plans?

Last week we saw Amazon drop a bit of a bomb on the competition by offering a $50 per year data plan. At 250MB a month, it isn't a very good data plan, but people will buy it. I wondered how Amazon could have negotiated such a good deal with AT&T. Perhaps they're cutting them in on revenue from users who shop on Amazon while using a Kindle Fire HD via the LTE data network? It was purely speculation, but it intrigued me enough that I spent a bit more time thinking about this whole topic. And I quickly realized that Apple actually has a pretty well-established iTunes affiliate program.

In case you aren't familiar with affiliate programs, they allow someone to earn a commission by promoting some other company's products. For example, website (like iMore and many others) can link to great new music via iTunes, or amazing new apps via the App Store, and receive a percentage of any referred sales, without costing the end user anything extra.

The last time I checked, Apple's iTunes affiliate program paid a 10% commission on sales. So what if they struck a deal with wireless carriers like AT&T and Verizon, essentially treating the carrier as the affiliate on any sales conducted over the cellular network? The carrier would make additional revenue on all iTunes and App Store sales, and Apple could use this to negotiate lower priced data plans for its customers.

It seems to me that any vendor who can get its customers a lower priced data plan (versus other vendors), has a significant competitive advantage. Amazon has started down this road already, and I think Apple could be next if they want to be.

Can Google, RIM or Microsoft do the same? I don't think so. At least not with something compelling to sell to the end user. Android users don't tend to spend much money on apps (as least based on the developer discussions I've had). Google doesn't really sell anything other than Adwords (and consumers don't care to buy pay per click ads). RIM doesn't even have an affiliate program created yet, but at least their users actually spend money on apps. And Microsoft? They're hardly out of the gate yet.

Apple has a huge app and iTunes ecosystem that people actually spend money on. Every day. Amazon has a massive retail backend along with a great library of digital content (even if they have very few apps). Both companies have well-established affiliate programs. Cutting in the carrier as an affiliate seems to be logical.

It seems to be a competitive advantage.

But would Apple do it?

Amazon takes aim at Apple iPad with larger 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD

“Amazon.com Inc unveiled a larger, high-speed Kindle Fire tablet on Thursday for $499, challenging Apple Inc’s dominant iPad and intensifying a battle with Google Inc and Microsoft in the booming tablet arena,” Lisa Richwine and Alistair Barr report for Reuters.

“The world’s largest Internet retailer, which got into the market last year with a tablet roughly half the price of the iPad, will begin selling on Nov 20 an 8.9-inch version with a high-definition screen, that works off fourth-generation or 4G wireless broadband,” Richwine and Barr report. “Called the Kindle Fire HD, its price tag matches the current-generation WiFi-only iPad but its 1920 by 1200 resolution screen lags Apple’s so-called ‘retina’ display. At 8.9 inches, it is also smaller.”

“Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos, taking the stage in Santa Monica, California, unveiled two 8.9-inch versions, both called the Kindle Fire HD. A Wi-Fi version will go for $299. Two 7-inch tablets will cost less. The updated Kindle Fire will go for $159 and a Kindle Fire HD version is priced at $199,” Richwine and Barr report. “On Thursday, the company also showed off a ‘paperwhite’ e-reader with a much sharper screen and longer battery life. The 3G wireless version that made digital readers mainstream will sell for $179 starting in October, in time for the crucial holiday season. A Wi-Fi-only version will go for $119, and the cheapest will carry a $69 price tag — undercutting the cheapest Barnes and Noble Nook.”

Read more in the full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Competition is only good when the competition is any good. For now, at these price points, Amazon has some compelling tablet/e-readers.

For sure, they’re still inferior in terms of hardware, software, industrial design, and ecosystem versus what Apple already offers today and has been offering for years, but Wintel long ago proved that quality and ease-of-use doesn’t matter as much as price to the great unwashed – plus Amazon’s offerings are markedly less inferior to Apple’s current lineup after today.

Today, from Amazon, we saw the first real challenge to Apple’s iPad hegemony.

You can bet they’re crunching iPad numbers in Cupertino this afternoon. Can’t wait to see your answers, Apple!

iPad Tips: How To Hard Reboot the iPad When It Freezes Up

HomeandPowerCobalt

A hard reboot will very rarely be needed on the iPad but it is worth knowing how to do one for those occasions when it is called for. If your iPad becomes unresponsive - i.e. does not react to taps and gestures on the screen or to home button presses - then you need a hard reboot to snap it back to normal behavior.

Here's how to perform a hard reboot:

– Hold down the Power and Home buttons at the same time for close to 10 seconds.

– Ignore the Slide to Power Off bar across the top of the screen when it appears and just keep holding the two buttons until you see the iPad screen go black and then see the Apple logo on the screen as it restarts.

That's it. This sort of reboot should get you past any rare occasions where the iPad freezes up or becomes largely unresponsive.

Apple, FBI deny hacker claim of breach of Apple iOS device user data

“Apple Inc. and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation denied claims by hackers who said they stole information on 12 million Apple Inc. user accounts from an FBI computer,” Jordan Robertson and Adam Satariano report for Bloomberg.

“Many of the hackers' claims, posted this week in a long online missive from the group calling itself Anonymous. The FBI said in a statement yesterday that there was ‘no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data,’” Robertson and Satariano report. “Apple said it didn't provide any user information to the FBI or other organizations. ‘The FBI has not requested this information from Apple, nor have we provided it to the FBI or any organization,’ said Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman.”

Robertson and Satariano report, “The hackers may have posted some legitimate users' device names and the unique identifier codes assigned to their iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches, according to Sean Sullivan, a security adviser at F-Secure Corp. who examined a data file that the hackers released. It isn't known whether the hackers really have the other information they claim to have redacted from the data file, including user names, mobile phone numbers and addresses. ‘What they have released is not a very serious breach at all,’ Sullivan said in an interview. As for claims that the information came from the FBI, he said, ‘they've offered no additional corroborating evidence, they've offered nothing else — they've immediately demanded no interviews. I think they've made it up.’”

Speed Up Firefox - 3 Easy Steps

Firefox-is-everywhere

Have you, at one point, experienced a slow connection? Want to know how to speed up Firefox? Below are some Firefox speed tweaks to help improve the browser's performance:

    1. Clear the cache. Manually clear your cache by clicking Tools on the upper portion of your screen. From the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data. Go to Settings afterwards and reduce the size of your cache to around 50 MB.
    2. Get rid of toolbars and plugins. Surely, they make your web surfing easier but if Firefox gets overloaded with these add-ons, it will run slower. It's best to cut down on these features especially if you rarely use them.
    3. Clean the registry. The registry is the central database of your computer. It includes all necessary information for the computer to run including that of your web browser. Certainly, it contains loads of Firefox related files and processes. Over time, these files become corrupted because of redundant and obsolete registry entries. This in turn make the registry congested thus slowing your Firefox browser. It helps then to have a registry cleaner installed in order to clean those junk taking up the space in your registry.

If you want to speed up your Firefox, follow these three steps. Unfortunately whole the first two are rather easy, the third step will require help. It is nearly impossible to clean the registry on your own unless you are a computer expert. But with the right software, you can scan your system and make Firefox faster in minutes!

Bruce Willis to sue Apple over right to bequeath his iTunes music collection to his daughters

“Bruce Willis is preparing to take Apple to court over who owns his huge digital music collection after he dies,” Fran Wetzel reports for The Sun.

“The Die Hard actor, 57, wants to leave the haul to his daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah,” Wetzel reports. “But under iTunes’ current terms and conditions, customers essentially only ‘borrow’ tracks rather than owning them outright.”

Wetzel reports, “Chris Walton, an estate specialist at Irwin Mitchell, told a newspaper: ‘Lots of people will be surprised on learning all those tracks and books they have bought over the years don't actually belong to them. It's only natural you would want to pass them on to a loved one.’”

Apple Releases iTunes Festival 2012 App for iOS, Apple TV

Every year, Apple brings the world together in one, spectacular event that lasts 30 days and nights and stars some of the most popular names in music. The iTunes Festival will take place at the Roadhouse in London this year starting on the first day of September. Approximately 60 bands will be showcased across the entire month and this year, not only will you be able to watch it from your iPad, you'll be able to watch it from your Apple TV, too.

While the iTunes Festival app for iOS is not new, and fans could watch the shows from their computers on iTunes, this is the first time that Apple TV was invited to the party. If you have the set-top box, you may have noticed the new app appear sometime over the weekend. Just like the subtle release of Hulu Plus on Apple TV, the iTunes Festival app appeared without the need of an update or download. It just magically showed up one morning. You may not have even noticed it yet.

The iOS app will allow users to view the schedule of events for the entire month, save favorite concerts, read about bands, and have notifications sent to remind them of the upcoming show. On Apple TV, viewers can see the calendar of events, read about bands, and stream the concerts live or view them after the fact for a limited amount of time.

The iTunes Festival app for iOS is free to download and, unlike the Olympics, free to watch for anyone. The Apple TV app is also free for the second and third generation device and should already be in your system. If it isn't, try manually updating your software and then restarting your Apple TV.

      Enjoy the show!

Features of new tech mobile Gadgets security to hacker crowd

      gadgets

The first presentation of Apple pitched measures of security in its mobile Gadgets of hackers and those who try to intent on thwarting cyber attacks. Its really excited hackers rapidly target more on smartphones. There are many related aspects show the difference when compared to computers in the developing stage of iphone.

Security is a practice to build but its not just something you can scatter. Gadgets security features has a deep perception into encryption, software keys and many other security features built into the iOS operating system for iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices.

Gadget refers to software programs including services that device need no independent application to be launched but manages multiple Gadgets when run in an such environment. In fact several implementations are available based on existing software development techniques provided applications for different causes.

Here is one good example, the newest apple Gadgets uses google backed android software to get rid of hacking attacks especially occuring on its mobile devices where device makers are fully dedicated to security. Technology improvement in terms of recent invention has the “first remote hacker exploit of an iPhone”.

Several reasons behind technology improvement while developing these devices such as, “how do they test their software before presentation?”, “how do they determine an application is malicious and how many times has it happened?” A gadget is a tiny tool such as a machine that has a specific function, but is frequently thought of its originality. Gadgets are sometimes referred to as gizmos.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Homework planner apps for iPhone shootout!

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: homework planners apps for iPhone shootout

If you're a high school or college student, your iPhone can make a great tool not only for learning, but for keeping track of courses, assignments, and projects. Whether you're in high school or university, the App Store is full of apps to help you succeed academically, and homework planners are no exception. iStudiez Pro, Erudio, and iHomework all offer ways to help you get and stay organized. But which one is best for you?

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: User interface

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: User interface

iStudiez Pro consists of four main sections, Today, Calendar, Assignments, and Planner. The Today tab gives you a look at not only any assignments, quizzes, or projects you have due within iStudiez Pro but a look at your Calendar app appointments and entries as well. It provides a nice way to see everything all in once place instead of trying to coordinate between two apps. You can tap into anything on the Today screen including events from your regular Calendar app to get more info.

iStudiez Pro for iPhone user interface

The Calendar tab is similar to the Today tab but gives you an entire calendar view of what you have coming up as a combined view between anything you have entered in your regular Calendar app and in iStudiez Pro. You can edit the way things show up on the calendar by changing the formatting options in the Settings section of iStudiez Pro.

Along the top of the Calendar view you'll see an option to toggle between Schedule and Assignments. The schedule view will give you a list of what you have going for the day as far as classes and other events in your calendar. Toggling to the assignments tab gives you a detailed view of what assignments you have due for that day. The calendar will also show a small paperclip on any day that an assignment is due.

iStudiez Pro for iPhone User interface

The Assignments tab does exactly what you'd expect it to do, show your assignments all in one place. You can sort things in a few different ways including by due date, course, and priority. Above that you can toggle between current and completed assignments. To bulk delete just tap the arrow button in the upper left and choose the assignments you want to delete, copy, or paste. The copy paste function is nice for assignments that are recurring instead of entering them new every time.

The planner section has three tabs along the top that allow you to view semesters, holidays, and instructors. You can tap into any section and add new data using the "+" icon located in the upper right hand corner. From the semesters tab you can tap into semester to view all the courses you have that semester. Viewing all courses will also bring up grids next to each class showing the days and times you have class. Tapping into individual courses shows the same grid but adds a toggle along the bottom to view assignments for that course as well.

From the main Today screen you can tap into Settings for iStudiez Pro at the top left. Here you have options to edit alerts, change formatting for the calendar, set up syncing, enable/disable grading, and more.

      Erudio for iPhone user interface

Erudio treats courses, assignments, and grading differently than iStudiez Pro. Upon launching the app you'll see a gorgeous main screeen with a list of your courses. Tapping into any one of them will give you an overview of that course with information such as the course name, section time, dates and times for that class, current tasks, and completed tasks.

From inside an individual course screen you can also add tasks, mark them as complete, and switch between general task view mode and a view that shows when the assignment is due. Toggling the check mark box at the bottom of this screen will show and hide completed tasks.

From the main Courses screen you can tap the menu icon in the upper left hand corner to see a slide out navigation menu. You'll spend most of your time in this panel. The menu items consist of Timeline, Courses, Tasks, and Gradebook. Underneath these items you've got configuration options for academic terms, locations, and settings.

Before starting to enter assignments and courses you'll need to set up an academic term. After that you can add courses before finally starting to add assignments and projects. The one issue I have with Erudio is that you must enter a section number in order to add a course. It's frustrating and honestly, probably not necessary. Most high schools do not institute course numbers, only colleges. If you're in high school you can, however, just make up a section number.

      Erudio for iPhone user interface

The first Timeline tab will show a list of what you have due based on a week view that is divided into subsections for each month. Tapping into a week will allow you to view all the tasks you have due combined with your schedule for that week.

The tasks section does exactly what you'd expect it to do, show all the tasks you have listed for all classes. You can further sort them by course or by due date. You aren't required to assign a due date if you don't want to. The last section is the Gradebook feature. This will give you a list view of all the classes you have set up in Erudio as well as an overall grade. Erudio takes an average of all the assgnments you've input grades for and gives you a percentage for that course.

The settings tab doesn't have too much to configure but you can choose to sync with iCloud or enable Calendar sync which adds all your tasks in Erudio into your stock Calendar app.

      iHomework for iPhone user interface

iHomework's layout is more simliar to that of iStudiez Pro and utilizes a main row of icons along the bottom that allows access to all your main functions. By default the tabs along the bottom consist of Work, Reminders, Courses, Teachers, and More. You can tap into the More section and then tap the edit button in the top right corner in order to re-order tabs and drag them around in any order you want. You can change the tabs along the bottom or replace them with other options such as Reading, Completed, Calendar, Types, Sync, and Settings. This gives you more flexibility and customization which will be welcome by many users.

The Work section will show a summary of everything you have assignment wise. iHomework allows you to sort work by day, week, and course. The next section which is Reminders is a place to list things you need to remember to do but aren't technically assignments. Perhaps you need to remember to pick up some books at the book store or buy a new graphing calculator. Reminders is the perfect place to put tasks like these. You can choose to set a reminder but you don't have to for things that aren't time sensitive.

The Courses section in iHomework will show a view of all your courses with the icon you picked to represent that course. Underneath the course title and number you will see a grid showing which days you have that course. Tapping into a course shows the time, date, teachers list, locations, and any other information you've added for that course. You can also toggle along the bottom between course details, assignments, and grading.

      iHomework for iPhone user interface

The Reading section is unique to iHomework and worth mentioning. You can add all your course books, icons for them, and then add reading assignments that will aggregate into the Reading section. Once in a reading assignment you can use the page marker feature at the top that looks like a curled page to mark what page you're on. If you're like me and hate curled and crimped book pages, this is a super nice feature. You can also tack on assignments, what pages you need to read, and any bookmarks related to that reading assignment as well.

The other tabs for iHomework are Settings and Sync. Settings allows you to edit icon badges, import or migrate iHomework data, and change sort and other preferences for assignments and reminders.

When it comes to user interface, Erudio has the most appealing interface but iHomework has the most useable and customizable interface. It'll really depend on which is more important to you. From a productivity standpoint, iHomework wins.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Adding terms and courses

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: courses and terms

iStudiez Pro allows you to easily add your terms and courses via the Planner section. Once inside the planner, make sure the Semesters tab is selected at the top and then click the "+" symbol in order to add a semester. You can name it whatever you like and then define the date range. After you're done you can go into a term and add your courses. You can also add holidays and instructors in the same manner.

iStudiez Pro for iPhone managing courses and terms

Once you're inside a term you can click the "+" sign next to the term in order to add more courses. You'll be required to enter a course name and next to it you can pick a color label to assign it. Tapping the Add Class button under the Schedule section allows you to set up times and dates. You can choose between a regular repeating course or a single class. If you choose repeating you'll be asked to put days of the week and meeting times that will repeat each week. If you choose single course you can just assign a date and time to it. If you have a list of exam dates, you can quickly add them from this screen as well. Tapping into any course will then allow you to start adding assignments and other options.

Erudio requires all course information to be entered before you'll be able to start entering assignments. And before you start setting up courses you'll have to pick a term. Tapping on the Academic Terms option under the Configuration section allows you to do this. Just like iStudiez Pro, you can choose time frames for academic terms and give them a short name. Once this is done you can tap into that term and add holidays as well.

Erudio for iPhone managine courses and terms

Returning to the main screen you are now good to go in Erudio to start adding courses. Under the Courses section, just tap the "+" sign in the upper right hand corner to start adding course information. You can give the course a short name and a number. You can add in a website if that course has one for resources as well as set a reminder color. The one thing that really irritates me with Erudio is that you are required to include a section number. Considering you're the only one using the app I'm not sure why this is a must have field. It's nice that they offer it but it shouldn't be required. This alienates high school students and anyone who doesn't have section numbers. You can add a place holder in the event that you don't know or have a section number. Putting a placeholder like 1234 will let you proceed. You can also use this area to turn on and off weighted grading.

Once you've added your courses and returned to the main menu of courses in Erudio you can now start adding assignments and tasks under each course.

iHomework for iPhone managing courses and terms

iHomework has a courses tab along the bottom menu that allows you to easily get a quick view of all the courses you have set up. You aren't required to set up acadmic terms or any other information. You actually don't have an option for terms so if that's important to you and you'd like to have past data stored, you may not like the lack of this feature in iHomework.

To add a course just tap the Add button in the upper right corner. You can name the course and assign times and dates as well as teachers and locations. Locations can use either GPS or you can manually enter the information. Tapping the icon for course will also give you the option of assigning one of many pre-designed icons to it. At the very bottom you can add a course website.

Once you've added all your courses into iHomework you're ready to start entering assignments and tasks.

When it comes to adding courses and terms, Erudio is the most complicated due to the need for section numbers. iStudiez Pro and iHomework are very simliar in format but iHomework doesn't have a terms feature. iStudiez Pro offers the best balance between ease of use and feature set when it comes to adding and managing academic terms and individual courses.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Managing homework, projects, and reminders

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: projects and assignments

iStudiez Pro allows you to add items not only from the Assignments section but the Calendar and Planner sections too. Once you've chosen to add an assignment you can give it a name, choose a due date, choose a notification time, and add a partner. You can change default notifications for assignments, exams, and classes within Settings or you can go with the defaults which are on the due dates or a few minutes before the course starts.

iStudiez Pro for iPhone adding assignments and tasks

Partners will allow you to add someone from your contacts or a new person to an assignment. This is a nice feature for group projects as it gives you easy access to their contact information from directly within the app. Just open the assignment and click on the partner you need to contact and you'll be taken directly to their contact card in your Phone app. Once you're done with an assignment and have a grade to input, you can mark the assginment as done and a grading option will pop up as long as you have grading enabled under settings. You can enter a total number of possible points and the number you earned. iStudiez Pro will automatically give you the calculation in terms of percentage.

Erudio for iPhone adding assignments and tasks

Erudio allows you to add an assignment or task from within any course or the Tasks menu. To add one just give it a name, choose the due date (you don't have to put one if you don't want to), choose a reminder and the course it goes with, and whether or not the assignment is graded. Once you receive a grade you can pop back in and enter what you earned and just like iStudiez Pro and it'll automatically calculate the percentages for you.

Once nice thing that Erudio offers is repeat tasks under reminders. You can choose a repeat for every hour, day, week, month, or year. You can also choose to use location based reminders by ticking location instead of time along the bottom of the reminders menu. You can have the app use a list of places you've already set up or add a location. You can then choose to have the app remind you when you leave or when you arrive at a specific place. Erudio is the only app that offers location based reminders for assignments and tasks.

iHomework for iPhone managing assignments and tasks

iHomework is better at organizing and sorting projects, reading assignments, and other types of tasks within the app. You can add any assignment or project to the work section while you can have other items such as reading tasks under the dedicated Reading tab. Reminders is also a separate section and a great place to put school (or non-school) related things so all your reminders are within one app. Things such as "Pick up a new pair of shoes after Chemistry" are perfect examples of things that iHomework can handle that don't really fit into apps like iStudiez Pro and Erudio.

To add an assignment in iHomework just choose add under the Work section. Fill in the name, choose the course, and then a notification setting. By default it will be set to none but you can choose between many options including minutes, hours, or days before. Once you've completed an assignment and earned a grade you can pop back in and add grades and mark it as complete. You can always see and edit completed assignments under the Completed section anytime.

When it comes to organizing and managing assignments, tasks, and notifications, iHomework provides the most flexibility and fine tuned control.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Syncing and cross-platform support

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: syncing

iStudiez Pro is a universal download for both iPhone and iPad. They also offer a Mac counterpart as a separate purchase. iStudiez Pro syncs directly with iCloud so once you enable sync you're good to go and won't have to worry about whether or not your data is available on all your devices.

Erudio also has a Pro version for both iPhone and iPad but they'll be separate downloads. There is no Mac version so if you want access on your computer, you should probably rule out Erudio as an option. If you're only using iPhone and iPad, Erudio supports iCloud sync natively so all your assignments, courses, and projects will sync seamlessly between them with no effort on your part.

iHomework's app is a universal download for both iPhone and iPad and they also offer a Mac version that is available in the Mac App Store. As far as syncing goes, iHomework unfortunately only offers Wi-Fi sync while on the same network. While it's functional, it's nowhere near as convenient as native iCloud or private server syncing.

When it comes to syncing, iStudiez Pro is the only app that enjoys counterparts for both iPad and Mac as well as full iCloud syncing.

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: Pricing

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: pricing

iStudiez Pro will only run you $0.99 and will work on both your iPhone and iPad without requiring a separate purchase. If you'd like the Mac version to complete the suite it'll cost an additional $9.99.

Erudio's premium app for iPhone will run you $2.99. If you'd like it for iPad you'll also have to fork over another $2.99 since it's not a universal binary. While there is iCloud syncing, there is currently no Mac version to add to the mix.

iHomework is currently priced at $0.99 in the iOS App Store and is a universal download for both iPhone and iPad. If you'd like to pick up the Mac version, it'll only cost you an additional $0.99 which is a great deal for any Mac app, let alone one with as many features as iHomework offers.

When it comes to cost, it's hard to beat iHomework's $0.99 price tag, especially because it's available for Mac and iOS.

      • iStudiez Pro for Mac - $9.99 - Download Now

      • iHomework for Mac - $0.99 - Download Now

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: The bottom line

iStudiez Pro vs. Erudio vs. iHomework: the bottom line

If you aren't concerned with syncing and only need a homework planner app on your iPhone, iHomework provides the best solution at the most reasonable price. Separate reading and reminders lists make iHomework the go-to iPhone app for staying on top of things. The only thing that keeps us from recommending iHomework as the best homework planner app is its lack of native iCloud syncing -- Wi-Fi sync is a pain.

Erudio does not offer a Mac app and the interface, although gorgeous, lagged during our tests. And then there's that pesky section number issue that can become annoying very quickly.

That leaves iStudiez Pro. If iCloud sync and cross-platform support are must haves for you, look no further than iStudiez Pro. It's got a huge list of features that'll keep you organized and set you up for success not only this school year but every year after that.
