Apple has again topped the list on Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix Q2 report analyzing the ad impression market share as the leading manufacturer, with the iPhone also taking the top spot as the leading individual mobile device.
Samsung came in second place overall, with 8 of the top 20 mobile phones, and when combined with Apple’s numbers they dominate the market with over 50% of all mobile device impressions. Apple’s devices alone account for over 31% of the ad impressions.
Android did take the lead in operating systems with 46% of the market, but the iOS operating system still accounts for 34% of impressions. Blackberry and Windows were lagging far behind with a combined total market share of less than 20%.
The top three tablets - the iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab and Kindle Fire – also made it onto the Top 20 Mobile Devices list, with iPad taking the top tablet spot. Tablet users do not appear to be opting much for 3G or 4G though as the Millennial also reports 95% of all tablet impressions are over Wi-Fi networks.
Smartphones saw an 8% growth compared to the same quarter last year and now account for 74% of all mobile device impressions. "Mobile devices and operating systems are growing more sophisticated by the day, and consumers are responding by spending less time with traditional media channels and more time with mobile devices like smartphones and tablets," said Jamie Fellows, SVP, Product, Millennial Media.
Gaming and music & entertainment continue to be the leading application categories in the mobile market as they tend to have the most options, but in a surprise move science & technology managed to grab the #3 spot after not even making the top ten last year. Books & reference also saw an upward trend, and weather made a big jump from #9 to #6 on the chart.
