Armour Casing – Locked iPhone security

iphone armour case

Why to endanger your precious and worthwhile iPhone under harmful scratches and heartbreaking scuffs. Don't waste your dreamy and functional smartphone under caustic crushes; armour your iPhone with protective shielding of hand-finished Portland Oregon's tremendous and classy 304 stainless steel backsplash. The extremely rugged case contains internal silicone bumpers to ensure a tight fit for iPhone 3G or 3GS. It's the kind of killer iPhone protective gear that heavy metal dreams are made of.

"You kind a make what you need," said Ryan about his steel masterpiece, "I wanted to protect the glass so I created a steel case that I could sit and not worry about it."

This armour case for your iPhone yields strong potency of high grade stainless steel, affectedly artistic cut and edges with a flip cover. The steel cover displays date and time through a window cut whereas, a few purposeful cut-away are placed for antenna reception and for steadiness in stainless steel thermal activity. The designer has kept major emphasis on elasticity of stainless steel, to provide best protection with style, which would not let you worry about any dense harm to your touch screen or iPhone. Of course, this level of hand crafted goodness isn't going to come cheap. The LTD Tools' iPhone case costs for $95, but it is assumingly a very little price to spend for the security, promised from a case that might just save your smartphone from a bullet hit as well.

For Some Fledgling Connected Gadgets, Privacy Considerations Come After the Fact

Fledgling hardware startups are often pushing the envelope when it comes to innovations in a "connected" world. Ever-present Wi-Fi and new, low-energy Bluetooth tech present new possibilities.

Tile

But these same companies could face potential issues if user privacy is not completely thought through.

Take Tile, a nifty lost-item finder that has far surpassed its initial fundraising goal of $20,000. The system works by attaching $19 physical tags, or tiles, to items such as a phone or wallet. These tiles then wirelessly connect to an app on users' smartphones using low-energy Bluetooth.

Digital "leashes" for lost items have been around for years. But Tile has a unique twist: Instead of alerting users when they stray from their belongings, the user tells the app that something has gone missing. Then Tile picks up the location data of other Tile app users - assuming that Bluetooth is turned on within their phone settings - that are near the missing object, and sends that data to the cloud. By doing that, Tile can give the missing object's owner an idea of where it is.

In the company's words, Tile uses the "Bluetooth connection of neighboring iPhones running the Tile app to cast a wider search net."

But here's where things are still a little murky: The company, started by co-founders Nick Evans and Mike Farley, is unclear what the opt-in process will be for other Tile app users, whose locations may be pinged at will.

When I asked Evans whether users might get an alert from the app that says something along the lines of, "You're near another user's lost item. Do you agree to share your anonymous location data now to help locate it?," he said he firmly believes that those kinds of alerts would be a nuisance to users.

This location data might be gathered by the company even if the users have downloaded the Tile app but aren't actively running it, Evans said. And Tile hasn't determined yet how long that location data will be stored on Tile's servers.

In other words, the company is still in the early stages of shaping its product vision and approach to privacy. Tile isn't expected to ship until the winter. And yet it has raised over $2 million from excited backers and early adopters.

Tile isn't the first crowdfunded startup to present a concept that could raise eyebrows. A $279 "life-blogging" camera called Memoto suffered some backlash when it introduced its product on Kickstarter last fall.

memoto_camera

The concerns were more overt in nature than the back-end opacity of the Tile app: Memoto is meant to be worn on a person's lapel, or around the neck, to silently capture an image from your life every 30 seconds. Some saw this as obtrusive: What happens when the person in front of you is unaware that an image of them is being captured twice a minute?

Sweden-based Memoto, which hasn't yet shipped the camera, has stood by its product's concept. Co-founder Oskar Kalmaru said in an earlier interview with AllThingsD that Memoto had very carefully considered the privacy issues and made the camera "pretty visible," despite its small size. "We didn't design it like it was some sort of spy camera. That was really important for us," he said.

In a more recent statement, Kalmaru insisted, "There is a higher level of transparency required from the Kickstarter community ... stemming both from the nature of crowd funding, where everybody is working together toward a common goal, and from healthy scepticism towards the claims of any project creator."

And while crowdfunded health gadgets are getting more and more love - there are even entire websites devoted to funding new health-care products - data privacy remains a concern, especially when the information is being transmitted to mobile phones.

Of course, blurred lines aren't relegated to just tiny or crowdfunded startups: More established companies are regularly discovered to be gathering more data than consumers are initially aware of, or inadvertently sharing users' smartphone contacts. Or they're simply introducing new technologies to age-old devices, such as Google Glass, that present new concerns.

But bigger companies also have in-house lawyers that can guide product people through uncharted waters. Tiny startups do not. Many might be wise to focus their vision not just on product innovation, but also on privacy communication - with the same consumers who are throwing their faith and money behind a product.

Oppo’s N1 Android smartphone, with a 13MP rotating camera, officially goes on sale in China

Oppo N1 Oppos N1 Android smartphone, with a 13MP rotating camera, officially goes on sale in China

Handset maker Oppo unveiled the N1 in September, a 5.9-inch Android smartphone with a full HD display and a 13-megapixel camera fitted to an adjustable hinge.

Today, the phone has finally gone on sale in China for CNY3498 ($574) on Oppo's website. Only 10,000 units are available though, on a first-come-first-served basis.

Oppo claims that the N1 camera, constructed from 67 different components, is the first to feature a six-piece lens design in an Android smartphone. It remains to be seen when the phone will roll out to other international markets, but in any case, it's got tough competition from the likes of the iPhone 5s, Lumia 1020 and Xperia Z1.

Chinese Galaxy S4 variant shows up in video

As Samsung gets another day closer to the launch of the Galaxy S4, a supposed Chinese variant of the upcoming phone stole some thunder recently by showing up on camera. Today, you get a lot more to look at as the owner of this smartphone released a video to help prove the legitimacy of his claim.

So far this year very few manufacturers have kept to a specific design language. If you take a look at the BlackBerry Z10 or the HTC One, these phone are wildly different in design from what has been expected from either company in the past. Everyone is looking for lighter, thinner, stronger phones with the best screen and the best battery life.

What each of these new handsets have in common is they are endlessly compared. More often than not though, users are still interested in comparing these phones to the Galaxy S3 . The comparison isn’t usually about specs, either. The design of the Galaxy S3 is both iconic and unique to Samsung, and is popular enough that it should surprise no one to see that the Galaxy S4 looks nearly identical to the S3.

Samsung Galaxy S4

The video offers a quick rundown of a version of the Galaxy S4 that is unlikely to be seen outside of China — the dual-SIM design just isn’t used in many other places.

When the phone boots, you can see the TouchWiz flavored Android 4.2.1, complete with lockscreen widgets and other visual cues to the latest version of Android. As the phone is used, you see much more of Samsung’s version of Android, including the “natural” sounds and animations. The camera is shown off for a brief moment, but not much is gained from that bit of the video. All told, the experience looks and feels like a slight bump all around and not a major overhaul or a reinvention.

While some may have been looking for a brand new look and feel from Samsung, it’s important to remember that they have a product that works right now. They don’t have to guess anymore, their hardware is selling better than any other Android phone right now and very few of their customers seem to mind their version of Android. Samsung’s presentation for the Galaxy S4 will likely focus on software improvements, like the eye scrolling and other gesture systems. Whether or not this will hurt Samsung in the coming year has yet to be seen.

Now read: Possible Galaxy S4 photos pop up just before official launch

BlackBerry 10 Boasts Some Key Apps, but Many Big Names Missing

The big day for BlackBerry has finally arrived. The world now knows what the company’s newest entrant in the smartphone race looks like.

BlackBerry 10 Apps

But what about apps?

For starters, a few key apps were already known, like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare. Several more were announced or shown onstage during the event: Skype, Amazon Kindle, WhatsApp, Angry Birds, Where’s My Water?, Where’s My Perry?, Box, MLB.com, Rdio, Songza, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, to name a few.

RIM — pardon me, BlackBerry — also showed how video chatting and screen sharing are now integrated into the popular BlackBerry Messenger application, as well as built-in photo-editing and music-video-making apps.

But right now it’s still unclear when apps like Instagram, Spotify and Pandora, or streaming video apps like Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, will make their way onto BlackBerry 10. And notably absent was Google Maps.

Update: A spokesman for BlackBerry says the company is “in talks” with Instagram and Netflix, but could not confirm when those apps will make their way into the store. Also, there is not a dedicated YouTube app, as we suspected, but he was quick to point out that YouTube can be watched on a mobile browser.

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has been quoted as saying that the company’s app store, still called BlackBerry World, would have more than 70,000 apps at the time of this launch. BlackBerry’s Martyn Mallick reaffirmed during today’s event that this is the case.

Just a couple weeks ago, RIM hosted a “Portathon,” enticing developers to create submissions for 15,000 new apps in a single weekend, as AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski reported.

To hear BlackBerry talk about it, developers are excited to take advantage of some of the new features that BlackBerry 10 offers, like “BlackBerry Flow,” or real-time multitasking between apps.

But keep in mind the competition. Apple currently has 800,000 apps in its App Store, with 300,000 optimized for iPad. The total number of apps in Google’s app store, Google Play, isn’t totally clear, but, by some estimates, Google is nipping at Apple’s heels.

Let’s not even get into apps for the Microsoft Windows Phone operating system. Okay, to be fair, let’s talk about it: Microsoft said in a recent blog post that it had “more than doubled” its Windows Phone app library with the addition of 75,000 new apps in 2012. Which means even Windows Phone boasts more apps than BlackBerry 10.

Of course, some will argue that it really doesn’t matter how many apps are available — it’s whether the important ones are there. Many smartphone owners download a bunch of apps, only to have them sit there taking up space on their phones.

Are BlackBerry’s apps enough to sway current iPhone and Android users?

The BlackBerry 10 event is still taking place. Click here for our live coverage.
