Nokia Interim CEO: We Have Three Strong Businesses Remaining

The Nokia that remains after it sells its phone business to Microsoft will be a considerably smaller and lower-profile company.

1-risto-siilasmaa1x1-jpg

It will hopefully be a more financially sound entity, as well, Nokia interim CEO Risto Siilasmaa told AllThingsD on Monday night in a telephone interview shortly after the deal was announced.

"We will continue to have three strong businesses," Siilasmaa said.

Nokia, which began by producing paper and rubber in the 1800s, is essentially exiting the mobile phone business that made it world-famous, selling both its Lumia smartphone business and its low-end mobile phone unit to Microsoft.

Remaining are its network-equipment business, its patent portfolio and its Here location-based services arm.

"Overall, we are very happy with the fact we will be able to support those businesses with a much stronger balance sheet," Siilasmaa said.

Nokia has been hit with continual bond-ratings downgrades and concerns about its long-term viability once the checks from Microsoft stopped coming. Under its previous deal with Microsoft, Redmond had been paying Nokia hundreds of millions of dollars in quarterly "platform support payments." However, the balance of payments was due to shift, with Nokia now owing more in minimum guaranteed royalties than it had coming in future payments from Microsoft.

Siilasmaa insisted that selling its namesake phone business to Microsoft was best for all of the company's stakeholders, including its 88,000 employees, 32,000 of whom are due to become Microsoft employees after the deal closes.

It will also immediately be a benefit for owners of Nokia stock, he said.

"The deal is immediately accretive to earnings," he said. "We believe we are making a very good choice for Nokia shareholders."

The deal, which requires regulatory approval and a nod from Nokia's shareholders, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014.

Steve Ballmer on Why Buying Microsoft's Biggest Phone Partner Makes Sense

Given that Nokia was already putting all its smartphone eggs in the Windows basket, it's a logical question to ask how Microsoft believes it will gain an advantage by purchasing Nokia's phone business.

Ballmer Windows Phone

No surprise, since he did the deal: CEO Steve Ballmer thinks the business will be stronger.

In an interview with AllThingsD, Ballmer laid out three reasons why things will be different once Microsoft owns Nokia's phone business.

First, Ballmer said, as close as the two companies were, there were legal and logistical barriers to total cooperation. Each company had to temper its investment based on separate business needs.

"As long as we were on a model with two different companies ... there was always some kind of a boundary along which it was hard to innovate from a hardware/software perspective," Ballmer said. "It doesn't mean we didn't do it, but we know we can improve our agility."

Second, Ballmer noted that each company was separately trying to build its own brand - a duplicative effort that diffused impact and wasted money.

"Just think about the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 1020, and you will that know we can make simpler, clearer messages to the market," Ballmer said, noting that Nokia accounts for 80 percent of all Windows Phones, although Microsoft still hopes others will continue to make it even after Microsoft takes over from Nokia.

Finally, Ballmer said that as two companies, Nokia and Microsoft had to make different choices about where and how much to invest.

"We know, as we scale, we need to invest behind this business," Ballmer said. "It simplifies the business decision-making and thinking having the economics be more unified."

Translating from this business-speak, buying Nokia's phone business gives Microsoft a greater business opportunity, if it can succeed. Microsoft noted in its case for why the deal makes sense that it currently gets less than $10 in revenue from each Nokia Windows Phone sold, as compared to the $40 or so in profit margins Nokia stands to make.

Of course, Nokia - and soon Microsoft - also has to build the phones, manage inventory, deal with carriers and more. Plus, there's still that pesky challenge of growing beyond single-digit market share.

"We're the No. 3 smartphone player," Ballmer said. "We have a long way to go, and we have a lot we want to do."

Nokia Shares Rise, Microsoft Falls in Reaction to Deal

thumbs_up_down

Shares of Nokia, the soon-to-be-ex-Finnish wireless phone giant, are rising significantly in reaction to the company's $7 billion deal to sell its devices business and license its wireless patents to U.S. software company Microsoft.

After the first hour of trading this morning, American Depository Receipts of Nokia had risen by $1.37, or more than 35 percent, to $5.26. Before the announcement of today's deal, the shares had fallen by more than one percent this year.

Meanwhile, shares of Microsoft fell by more than five percent in reaction to news of the deal. By 10:30 am ET, Microsoft shares had fallen by $1.81 to $31.59. The move mostly erased the benefits of a rally in Microsoft shares that came on Aug. 23, after CEO Steve Ballmer announced plans to retire from the company. Prior to today's news, the shares had risen by more than 25 percent this year.

Apple Patent Application Details Temporary Location-Specific iPhone Applications

apple-iphone-lawsuit

Oh no! Apple not again. I bet you need to waste a lot of dollars on your lawyers for such stupid and so-called marketing stunts of your competitive partners in the landscape. Lastly, Nokia and AT&T happily charged a lawsuit against you, now you may be endangered by one more patent application charge. Give a break to Apple all you jealous creep!

Apple launched their very freshly applications restaurant and public library that may be another attempt of claim from any of the competitive partner in the landscape. The applications are designed for the temporary and closed enhancement to your iPhone location based applications.

The ideas are very trouble-free in contrast of Apple's techno thinking. The content are managed through a centralized server that is in actual a pair a of Wi-Fi connectors that provides appropriate information regarding the restaurant and public library to the iPhone user. The applications are further modified as:

Restaurant:

It resolves specifically two major clauses of location based applications. It helps out user from the long waiting queue in the restaurant. Wonder you don't need to wait for your turn at any restaurant through the icon of "Wait Time". That automatically gives away a trouble-free option to wait for your turn at the restaurant through updates.

For example you wish to go at dine in your favourite Chinese restaurant but you hate those long waiting queues just log on to your iPhone and get started. You will be updated with the current timings for your turn. The second option lets you to "Place Order" that allows users to access a restaurant's menu on their device and submits their food orders in to "E" electronically and easily.

Public Library:

As you get in your most frequently visited library, the application would automatically access you the entire library's digital database of books and other content on the search. That does not bother you to have a secure position at one of the library's linked computers. And for privacy and security terms the application would automatically disappear as the user exits from the library.

The applications are very simply designed and may not be unique but a new feature to the iPhone user's location based patent application category. It is amazing when you can have the menu of a restaurant in your handy smartphone or locate the digital positioning in your public library. The patent application is solely credited to Apple engineer Scott Herz and was filed in November 2008.

Symbian Belle gets eight minutes of hands-on fame (video)

Screen grabs ain't got nuthin' on this one. Just as we savor a full set of screenshots showing off Symbian Belle in all its glory, a YouTube video of the unannounced OS strolls onto the scene with eight minutes of footage. The successor to Anna is seen here on a Nokia N8, which could be a sign that at least some existing Symbian^3 devices will receive the update when it becomes available. The video exhibits several aspects of the new UI, such as the Android-style pull-down bar for notifications, a back button-based interface, a new virtual keyboard, and a new camera UI - all of which appear to be significant improvements over the platform's predecessors. If you have a few minutes to spare, dive past the break to get the full tour.

Taking Aim at Cricket, T-Mobile Moves MetroPCS Into 15 New Markets

T-Mobile followed through Thursday on its promise to quickly expand its recently acquired MetroPCS brand into new cities.

tmobile_metropcs

The company announced a $40-per-month service and a pair of new devices that will come to 15 new markets as part of the MetroPCS expansion.

In the new cities, the MetroPCS brand will be used atop T-Mobile's network but set up its own stores, mostly through third-party exclusive dealerships.

MetroPCS will offer two new handsets in the new cities - the Nokia Lumia 521 Windows Phone and LG's Optimus F3 Android device. Customers will also have the option of choosing from six other models or bringing their own device.

The "$40, period" rate plan includes unlimited talk, text and data (including 500 megabytes of high-speed data), as well as taxes and fees for $40 per month.

"We're doubling the reach of MetroPCS in one fell swoop," T-Mobile chief marketing officer Mike Sievert said in a phone interview on Thursday. MetroPCS' current operation reaches about 100 million people. With the new cities, MetroPCS will be available to an additional 40 million people, with more markets planned for before the end of the year.

The move comes as T-Mobile rival AT&T is looking to acquire MetroPCS rival Leap Wireless, which sells under the Cricket brand. T-Mobile completed its MetroPCS purchase in May.

Cricket markets are a major focus of T-Mobile's expansion plans for MetroPCS, CEO John Legere said in an interview earlier this month.

"The vast majority of where we are headed are Leap markets," Sievert said. "AT&T is going after Leap, [but] it is going to take them months to get this done. Our view is, Leap customers deserve a better experience."

The new MetroPCS markets are:

Baltimore, Md.
Birmingham, Ala.
Cleveland and Akron, Ohio
Corpus Christi, Texas
Fresno, Calif.
Houston, Texas
Memphis, Tenn.
New Orleans, La.
Rio Grande Valley, Texas
San Antonio and Austin, Texas
San Diego, Calif.
Seattle and Tacoma, Wash.
Tallahassee, Fla.
Toledo and Sandusky, Ohio
Washington, D.C.

Nokia 700, smallest touch monoblock smartphone ever

The Nokia 700 is yet another smartphone that will run on the latest Symbian Belle operating system, where it also holds the (proud) distinction of being the most compact touch monoblock smartphone that is being sold at the moment. Don't be fooled by its size however - despite being this small, it is still more than capable of punching above its weight, as you will find out when you continue reading below.

Tipping the scales at just 96 grams while measuring a mere 110mm x 50.7mm x 9.7mm, the Nokia 700 does not sacrifice performance for size - in fact, it also has a 1GHz processor to keep up with the times, coupled with GPS navigation ability, an integrated FM radio, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5-megapixel full focus camera with an LED flash, 2GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes.

As for the display, you get a 3.2 ClearBlack AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass adorning the top for added toughness, while built-in NFC lets you simply share images via touch - or use the smartphone in conjunction with other NFC-enabled accessories including the Nokia Play 360 amongst others.

Have a heart for the environment? The Nokia 700 won't disappoint you, being Nokia's greenest smartphone to date, being free of pollutants like PVC, RFR and BFR. Not only that, it goes further by relying on materials such as bio-plastics, recycled plastics and recycled metals in its construction. Once you're done, the Nokia 700 is fully recyclable - now how about that? The only problem is, I don't know whether to dump this inside the glass, paper or plastic can.

Expect the Nokia 700 to retail for around 270 Euros as it hits the market in Q3 2011. [Press Release]

Nokia 701 intends to be graphical powerhouse

I never really thought that phones would have evolved to being this smart today - and the color screen on ordinary cellphones at the turn of the century was just a start. The Nokia 701 shows just how far the humble phone has come, where we will look at the specifications in greater detail first.

Running on a 1GHz processor, the Nokia 701 is also accompanied by HSUPA 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, NFC support, GPS navigation and an integrated FM radio. The Symbian Belle operating system (the latest, which succeeds Symbian Anna by the way) will run in tandem with a 1GHz processor.

What makes the Nokia 701 outstanding would be its 3.5 IPS LCD touchscreen display with ClearBlack technology, where your eyes will be greeted by a combination of excellent brightness and contrast. In fact, it is touted to be the brightest smartphone display to date where Nits are concerned, and you need not worry about its toughness as it will boast Corning's Gorilla Glass.

Underneath that would be a new graphics co-processor that churns out better looking visuals than before, as this graphics co-processor has a speedier clock and four times the graphics memory of previous Symbian smartphones.

Capable of shooting 8-megapixel images with its full focus camera with a dual-LED flash at the back, you can also carry out video calls thanks to a front-facing camera. Q3 2011 is when you can pick up the Nokia 701 for around 290 Euros in steel dark, silver light, amethyst violet, and white shades. [Press Release]

Fly Or Die: Nokia Lumia 925

Screen Shot 2013-07-28 at 12.27.49 PM

The Nokia Lumia 925 is the Finnish phone maker's latest attempt at wooing hapless shoppers over to the Windows Phone 8 platform, and it's a solid proposition.

The real stand-out feature has to be the camera, which is still considered PureView despite being an 8.7MP camera, as opposed to the Lumia 1020 s 41-megapixel shooter. Still, the Carl Zeiss camera is loaded with exclusive Smart Camera software, including a special burst mode that takes ten shots at once.

This burst mode lets users do a number of different things, including grabbing the best frame of a shot, composing an action series, or even changing focus after the shot was taken, Lytro-style.

It's pretty much unanimously agreed upon by Natasha, John and I that this is one of the best smartphone camera's available.

But the camera isn't the only thing that shines: The Lumia 925 has a slight profile with metallic edges and has a solid feel in the hand. John admits that it does soak up prints, however.

In terms of specs, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon chip powers the device, which has 16GB/32GB of onboard memory and 1GB of RAM under the hood. It also sports a 4.5-inch AMOLED display at 1280 x 768.

And if that weren't attractive enough of a deal, you can run in and pick up the Lumia 925 at a T-Mobile for $0 down and 24 payments of $20.

Two flies.

Shelly Palmer Talks Cell Phones on Always Mountain Time Radio

Shelly made an appearance on Always Mountain Time radio and hit on a wide array of topics in tech: the Connected World, how small businesses have had to change over the years and the different types of media that businesses have to deal with. He also talks about cell phones: why everyone hates the iPhone 5, why you should love the Galaxy S IV, why the Lumia 1020 matters, and why you'd want to buy the BlackBerry Q10.

Shelly Palmer Radio Report – July 17, 2013

If you've ever wanted to take massively-sized photographs without lugging around a DSLR camera, I've got a smartphone for you. Last week, Nokia unveiled the Windows 8-powered Lumia 1020, complete with a 41-megapixel PureView camera and Carl Zeiss optics. Yep, you heard me right - 41 megapixels. The massive 41-megapixel images are processed by new Pro Camera and Smart Camera software, which are also hitting other Lumias soon. Since a 41-megapixel image is far too big for a mobile upload, the Lumia 1020 actually saves two versions of each photo you take: the full 41-megapixel image as well as a 5-megapixel version, which is far more conducive to sharing on Facebook. The rest of the Lumia 1020's specs are good, not great: it features a 4.5-inch AMOLED display, a dual-core processor and 32 gigs of storage. If you've absolutely got to own the phone with the best built-in camera on the market, the Nokia Lumia 1020 will hit AT&T store shelves exclusively on July 26 for $299 with a new two-year contract.

Nokia Chose Windows Phone Because it Feared Samsung Would Rule Android

Nokia

Nokia's decision in 2011 to pin the future of its smartphone business on Windows Phone has been heavily scrutinized over the years, but the reasoning behind that choice is only becoming fully clear now. When asked last week if he regretted not choosing Android, CEO Stephen Elop told reporters that he's "very happy with the decision we made." He added, according to The Guardian, that "What we were worried about a couple of years ago was the very high risk that one hardware manufacturer could come to dominate Android." At the time, Nokia "had a suspicion of who it might be, because of the resources available, the vertical integration." That company, of course, is Samsung. Elop continued, "Now fast forward to today and examine the Android ecosystem, and there's a lot of good devices from many different companies, but one company has essentially now become the dominant player."

A Tablet For The Holidays? Maybe

iPad Air

If you were hoping to purchase a new tablet this holiday season, you're in luck. Between Microsoft's recent launch of the Surface 2, Nokia unveiling what seemed like 100 new devices at Nokia World and then Apple's unveiling of the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display - there are several to choose from. Which should you buy?

Iteration From Apple

Apple's in a bit of a pickle right now, and it knows it. It used to enjoy close to 100 percent market share because Apple invented the category. Now, it has about 49 percent market share and the numbers are trending in the wrong direction.

The company knew it had to make a big splash to regain some momentum. It showed off two new devices: the iPad Air, which is thinner, happier, better, yummy yummy; and a new Retina display version of the iPad mini, which at 7 inches is a great form factor. They're good. But it's not really true innovation. (That's not to say Apple can't do true innovation anymore; the newly re-designed Mac Pro that was shown off just before the new iPads is stunning.)

But when Apple unveiled its new iPads, CEO Tim Cook said, "Our competitors don't really know what they're doing." He said that his competitors are making tablets, they're making notebooks, they're making Chromebooks. Cook said that Apple's clear focus and singular vision is better. I disagree. Truthfully, Apple is just making iPads. They're making them great. If you like an iPad, nothing else will do. But, if you want a combination of a PC and a tablet, Microsoft is really working hard.

So... What's Going on Between Nokia and Microsoft?

Nokia Lumia 2520

It makes no sense for Nokia to unveil a brand new tablet, powered by Windows RT, on the same day that Microsoft launched its new Surface 2 tablets. Nokia's about to be bought by Microsoft, yet for some reason still thought it was a good idea to unveil what's basically the same unit as the new Surface 2 (the new version of the tablet known as the Surface RT). Both of these devices are crippled because they're both RT units. The Lumia 2520 and the Microsoft Surface 2 are literally both the same unit from a technology standpoint.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2

The standout tablet from either company is the Surface Pro 2, which is a whole other thing because it's expensive. It's basically a laptop that's sold without the keyboard... which you will purchase separately making it even more expensive. The Surface Pro 2 with a keyboard is far more expensive than an iPad Air and more than double the price of the new iPad mini. Nothing to compare here. The Surface Pro 2 competes with Windows Ultrabooks, not Apple iPads.

Remember: It's Not Microsoft vs. Apple

The Surface Pro 2 is getting great reviews ... but there's no one lining up to buy them. The battle is not between Microsoft and Apple. The battle is between Google and Apple and, specifically, between Android devices and iOS devices. Microsoft hopes, wishes and prays to be included in the conversation, but it's not there. Microsoft is trying to create a market for tablet computing as opposed to tapping the market of tablet users - it may sound like a semantic argument, I assure you it is not.

Look at Microsoft's operating systems. You have Windows 8 on a PC vs. Windows 8 on a tablet vs. Windows RT ... these are operating systems that people will like when they learn to use them, but Microsoft has done nothing to teach them to use them. When you walk up to Windows 8, you go, "I want it to be Windows 7!" Microsoft has missed all kinds of consumer opportunities. What they have to do is figure out how they're going to beat Apple and Google at the game Apple and Google are actually playing - a game Microsoft clearly does not understand.

Who Won Triple Tablet Tuesday?

Apple. It said, "We're going to be here for Christmas, and you're going to be happy!"

Who lost? Microsoft. It's about to go and spend a big chunk of money for Nokia, and Nokia's sitting there going, "We don't know what we're doing..." and Microsoft is saying the same thing. Microsoft's got some work to do. There's a chance for Microsoft to make great strides in the tablet market, but looking at these holiday offerings, it's hard to be optimistic.
