Stir Kinetic Desk, Created by Former iPod Engineer, Makes Other Standing Desks Look Boring

Standing desks are old news. How about a desk that breathes?

StirDesk1

That's the idea behind the Stir Kinetic Desk, a new adjustable standing desk dreamed up by a former Apple iPod engineer.

The desk has a small touchscreen on the lower left-hand side of the desktop. Tap it twice, and the desk rises. Tap the screen again, and it sinks to sitting mode. A thermal sensor detects your presence.

Pressing a button on the desk cues up "active mode," which every so often reminds you to get up and slave away while standing, not sitting. It does this by breathing. It is seriously called Whisper Breath, not to be confused with Whispersync, Amazon's content-syncing feature. The desk rises and falls just slightly, as a nudge to stand up.

And the Stir is also Wi-Fi- and Bluetooth-connected, so it has the potential to sync with health and wellness apps like Fitbit.

StirDesk2

But, for $3890, the Stir Kinetic desk had better do everything but make me a sandwich. Founder and CEO JP Labrosse said Stir is an investment. Think of it like a mattress, he said, another household item some people will spend big bucks on because they're spending a third of their life on it. (Who are all these well-slept people?)

There are other motorized standing desks on the market that aren't quite as expensive - like the UpDesk and the NextDesk - but they won't learn your work habits over time, or connect to "smart" apps.

Stir, the company, launches out of stealth mode today; the desk is expected to start shipping early next year. The maplewood desk is made in Brooklyn, and comes in Apple white and Hipster espresso (color descriptions are mine, not Stir's).

These pictures really don't do it justice, so I recommend checking out the video below:

Orange signals mobile broadband tariff tweaks

Box of MiFi tricks up its sleeve

Network giant Orange has refreshed its mobile broadband plans while touting a new Wi-Fi device for those on the move.

Orange's 'Small' plan offers an initial allowance of 500MB and costs 10 a month. Although for a fiver more, customers can benefit from the 'Medium' plan, which doubles the allowance to 1GB and throws in unlimited Wi-Fi.

Those with demand for more - or sufferers of Goldilocks syndrome - may want to move to the 'Large' plan, which offers 3GB allowance as well as the free Wi-Fi for 30 a month.

Customers already on the network - be that home broadband or mobile - will benefit from a 5 reduction of these figures.

The company has also announced a palm-sized wireless receiver box, which supports up to five connections simultaneously, and packs a Micro SD slot for sharing files between devices. The Orange E5830C Mobile Wi-Fi kit will be available in the coming weeks, with prices ranging from 20-60 depending on the mobile broadband tariff chosen.

Nokia 701 intends to be graphical powerhouse

I never really thought that phones would have evolved to being this smart today - and the color screen on ordinary cellphones at the turn of the century was just a start. The Nokia 701 shows just how far the humble phone has come, where we will look at the specifications in greater detail first.

Running on a 1GHz processor, the Nokia 701 is also accompanied by HSUPA 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, NFC support, GPS navigation and an integrated FM radio. The Symbian Belle operating system (the latest, which succeeds Symbian Anna by the way) will run in tandem with a 1GHz processor.

What makes the Nokia 701 outstanding would be its 3.5 IPS LCD touchscreen display with ClearBlack technology, where your eyes will be greeted by a combination of excellent brightness and contrast. In fact, it is touted to be the brightest smartphone display to date where Nits are concerned, and you need not worry about its toughness as it will boast Corning's Gorilla Glass.

Underneath that would be a new graphics co-processor that churns out better looking visuals than before, as this graphics co-processor has a speedier clock and four times the graphics memory of previous Symbian smartphones.

Capable of shooting 8-megapixel images with its full focus camera with a dual-LED flash at the back, you can also carry out video calls thanks to a front-facing camera. Q3 2011 is when you can pick up the Nokia 701 for around 290 Euros in steel dark, silver light, amethyst violet, and white shades. [Press Release]

3G Tablets fall from favor say researchers

Integrated data connections in tablets along with mobile hotspot connected slates are falling from favor, new research suggests, with WiFi-only use proliferating among owners of iPads and other models. While 60-percent of tablet owners used WiFi only and 5-percent reported some intent of subscribing to a mobile broadband plan within the next six months back in Apri, NPD Group discovered, cellular use has actually shrunk in intervening period.

In fact, WiFi-only use is now up to 65-percent, indicating tableteers are sticking to WiFi hotspots and avoiding cellular data plans. "Concern over the high cost of cellular data plans is certainly an issue," NPD's Eddie Hold says, "but more consumers are finding that Wi-Fi is available in the majority of locations where they use their tablets, providing them 'good enough' connectivity."

Hold told SlashGear that NPD had 3,300 participants in the survey, with a mixture of WiFi-only and WiFi + 3G tablets owned.. "But even Wi-Fi only tablets could be connected through smartphone-hotspot or Mi-Fi options" Hold pointed out to us.

"In addition," the survey concluded, "the vast majority of tablet users already own a smartphone, which fulfills the 'must have' connectivity need." That sentiment seems, in part at least, to be increasingly echoed by manufacturers producing tablets. ASUS, for instance, confirmed earlier this month that it had no plans to produce a 3G/UMTS version of the Transformer Prime, citing low customer response to the variant.
