iLive Clock Radio is one sexy-looking iPhone dock

Most iPhone docks don't do very much with the phone - you just leave it on to charge for the night and that's about it. Well, that's where the iLive Clock Radio Dock comes into play. The dock comes with a clock face that's missing the 12, and when the iPhone is plugged in, it displays the 12 and the clock hands with the use of an app. Charging your iPhone and turning it into a clock at the same time is a pretty great idea.

Unfortunately, a clock designed in this way means that without the iPhone it is pretty useless. But hey - so are other docks - at least this one gives you the added benefit of an analog clock and it's more functional than the wooden iPhone 4 alarm dock. The iLive Clock Radio Dock is available now for $49.99 from the iLive website.

Facebook does iPad app at last

Facebook does seem to have yielded to the pressure of not having an iPad app - never mind that the iPhone already has a Facebook app on the Apple App Store when it opened in July a few years ago. Winds of change are a-comin' as there are industry insiders who claim that Facebook is on its way to introduce a free iPad application which has been specially designed and optimized for the tablet.
In production for almost a year, and having gone through several design iterations, it should be in its final stages of testing now. Other than that, no further details were released, since the product plans are strictly confidential.

Those who have seen the application claim that it boasts a slick design which has been specially tailored for the iPad and its touchscreen interface. It seems that the Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features will be overhauled as well, and you can even shoot and upload photos and videos using the iPad's built-in camera to boot.

Initial impressions have been nothing short of positive, so hopefully all this good vibes will be translated to a stunning app when it arrives.

It's No "Game of Thrones" Finale, but Yahoo Logo-Palooza Ends Tonight

Yahoo-Logo-feature

Here are a few choice things I wait for in rapt anticipation:

While "Game of Thrones" is on hiatus after its sensational "Red Wedding" finale, the next episode of "Orange Is the New Black" - which spouse and I are watching two at a time nightly, although I am considering sneaking by day to find out what Pornstache will do to Red.

The new iPhone, which will be unveiled next Tuesday at Apple's Cupertino, Calif. HQ - because I will upgrade to it, my older son will get my old one and my younger son will get his brother's old one as his first phone ever (it's a family of impatience over here).

Whenever anyone says they are "gladiators in suits" on "Scandal" or whenever its star, Kerry Washington as Washington fixer Olivia Pope, gives that long, sad gaze that comes from loving the wrong man who also happens to be President of the United States.

The Oreo version of Google Android - because I like Oreos. A lot more than KitKats.

And even - and I am ashamed to admit this - whatever the next cup-full-of-crazy thing Miley Cyrus gets into.

But, I'll be honest - except for the fact that I have to cover it at the time I would have been watching my daily dose of "OITNB" tonight - I will have to drastically gin up my excitement level over the new Yahoo logo that is set to be unveiled at 9 pm PT.

Doubtless, others have been pre-briefed on this new look, which was last changed a few years ago. But, for the rest of us, over the last month Yahoo has been showing 29 other logos it will not be using to get us all atwitter with expectation.

While I still don't quite get this move from a marketing perspective - it's like having a parade of all the people you decided not to marry before your wedding - there have been some design doozies in the bunch. That might have been the point: Show off all the bad so we will love, love, love the new one.

On that score, mission accomplished!

Such as this one from Day 2 that looks like an air freshener I declined to purchase last week at Safeway:

ku-medium

Or this one from Day 11, which looks like my grandmother, who had excellent cursive penmanship, wrote it (nothing says the future like a handwritten logo from the last century!):

ku-medium

Or Day 20, which resembles what happens when I let those kids of mine play on my computer and they screw up the fonts:

ku-medium

Or Day 28, which is pretty much a flat-out lift of the Yoo-hoo logo, a high-fructose corn syrup beverage I enjoy imbibing from time to time:

ku-medium-2

Finally, I really don't have one single clue about what's going on with Day 29:

ku-medium

Which, I think, is the goal of the marketers of Yahoo - after this parade of losers, we shall now get to gaze upon the gleaming new spouse that the Silicon Valley Internet giant will be wedded to for years to come. This jazz-hands rollout is very much in keeping with the tenure of new CEO Marissa Mayer, who is trying to generate as much excitement around Yahoo as possible as part of her turnaround efforts.

Presumably, this logo for the new Yahoo will be just the ticket! We'll see - but, until then, I am going to go and see what Crazy Eyes is up to, which is one sure thing to be interesting.

Apple Won't Introduce New Apple TV Box Next Week, Will Upgrade Software

apple tv update

There are very, very good odds you're going to hear about new iPhones at Apple's event next Tuesday.

But if you're looking for a new Apple TV, you're going to be disappointed.

Despite speculation about new Apple TV hardware on the way, Apple won't be unveiling any new boxes next week, according to people familiar with the company's plans.

That said, the company will be tweaking the software inside its Web TV box. Apple has already said that it will be bringing its new iTunes Radio service to Apple TV. And it has been adding new content partners, including Disney and HBO, throughout the summer.

Expect to hear about more changes next week.

Sources said that one new feature in the works will let people who've bought content from Apple play that stuff on other users' Apple TVs, via Apple's Airplay system and Apple's server. So if you bought a TV show or movie from Apple's iTunes store, you could watch it at a friend's house by calling it up on your iPhone and telling your friend's Apple TV to start streaming it. (The files wouldn't need to be stored on your iPhone or iPad)

You could have previously accomplished this by getting your friend to log out of their Apple TV box and then logging in with your own credentials. But that's awfully cumbersome - particularly with Apple's minimalist Apple TV remote. And you can already do a variation on this, though not as elegantly, with some Apple TV apps like HBO Go.

But if this makes it that much easier to watch "Pain and Gain" with your pals, then that's a good thing. And if that makes you less inclined to buy a $35 Google Chromecast and treat that as your Web TV device, then that's good for Apple.

No comment from Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr.

Legal Notices In iOS 5 Hint at Future Apple Navigation App

There's been a long-standing rumor that Apple is at work on big mapping/navigation project for iOS. The company hasn't let much slip about its plans, but public job postings paint the picture that Apple's been assembling a team for just such a mission. Now an eagle-eyed user of the iOS 5 developer release spotted something curious in the operating system's legal notices, adding more ammunition to the case for a new Apple mapping app.

Notices include those dealing with the offerings of at least nine companies with ties to mapping and navigation. Though some of them provide data for Google's map services as well, there are distinct entries here that look like they're the result of new agreements that Apple has made itself.

Among the companies, Waze deals in crowd-sourced traffic data. We heard that Apple was interested in just that sort of technology, relying on information gathered from users to provide real-time congestion information. That association is likely to be the closest thing to a smoking gun we're liable to come across at this point.

While Apple is still using Google data for Maps at this point, it seems that it's setting itself up for a future where it will have the resources to offer its own mapping solution; we just don't know how long that will take.

Microsoft Wants to Buy Your Old iPad

Own an old iPad that no longer sees much use? Microsoft's happy to take it off your hands. The company recently began running a new promotion, offering Microsoft Store gift cards in exchange for "gently used" iPads. If you've got an iPad 2, 3, or 4 that meets that criteria, Microsoft will give you a minimum of $200 in store credit which you can spend on one of its Surface tablets or any other product available through the Microsoft Store.

Chair Entertainment Founder: "I Cannot Wait" for Physical Controllers for iPhones

mustard ib3

At Apple's iPhone 5c/5s event on Tuesday, Chair Entertainment co-founder and creative director Donald Mustard debuted Infinity Blade 3, the newest game in the popular iOS sword-fighting series. Naturally, he's making the rounds this week to talk about the new game and how it takes advantage of the iPhone's hardware ... but that's not stopping him from hinting at more to come.

Mustard characterized Infinity Blade 3 as a "statement" of the power of touchscreen design, saying the series "spawned a whole new genre of game." However, absent from the iPhone event this week was an update on how iOS 7 will support physical game controller peripherals, one of the features mentioned at this year's WWDC keynote.

Mustard said he's excited for that eventuality.

"I cannot wait for the day when we can make a mobile game that's supported by a more traditional controller," he said.

He said fans have asked him when Chair would make a touchscreen version of one of its pre-Infinity Blade games, Shadow Complex. The answer: never!

"Shadow Complex wouldn't be good with touchscreen controls," Mustard said, adding that Infinity Blade would not work as well on Xbox. If Chair makes a mobile game for a physical controller peripheral, he said, it "would want to design the experience from the ground up."

It would also be possible to have a mobile game that combines both forms of control, he mused.

In the meantime, though, Infinity Blade 3 at least looked good in Mustard's demo. The battle he showed off on the iPhone 5s featured an imposing and smoothly animated dragon, which was far larger than the game series' previous bosses. Although the dragon will look best on the 5s, it and other animations in the game will still look "awesome" on the iPhone 4, Mustard said, calling the latter device "still pretty damn powerful."

IB3 will cost $6.99 when it goes on sale for iOS devices on Sept. 20, timed to the launch of the 5c and 5s.

Google+ for iPhone coming within days

Dedicated iOS app on the way

Google's Google+ for iPhone app should be landing in the App Store within the next 2 weeks according to the big G, after confirming that it has submitted the app to Apple for approval.

The new app, which only works for those who have access to the new closed beta service, promises to give Google+ users the chance to catch up on their new found friends and the social network from a dedicated app rather than just the mobile website currently available.

Googler Erica Joy made it very clear in a post on Google+:

"For my iPhone using friends: the Google+ iPhone app has been submitted to the App store (no not today, sometime prior to today) and is awaiting approval."

Of course there is no guarantee that Apple will approve the app as is. Many question whether or not the Cupertino-based company will allow the app to upload photos in the background, something no other app to our knowledge does.

The Android version of the Google+ app gives you full control over the new social network as well as offering other features like automatically adding people to your Contacts book and letting you "Huddle", two other features that might not make it to the iOS version.

Are you looking forward to the iPhone app? Let us know.

App battle continues in App store

battle in app store

The iPhone is most definitely a consumer-oriented product with the expandability of countless iPhone applications and accessories. The fight for SXSW is now over, Apple fairly declared winner in the "Location War" with the huge amount of exposure in the App store. The trend augments as Apple highlights many others in the App store under, "What's Hot".

Apple notifies five worthwhile apps in "What's hot?" on App store, whereas iTunes version app locates their own area under "News & Noteworthy". The five apps take up the top slot of the "What's Hot" that is simply put to the huge promotion. The mystery continues to uncover these five apps, but the fact is that you are very familiar with them, and almost access their location supported servers consecutively. The apps are enlisted as:

    1. Being top most is Foursquare.
    2. Gowalla fighting the war on second.
    3. Loopt didn't back off from the battle, and stands third.
    4. Whrrl 3 queue in the line for fourth position, promising better opportunity.
    5. Last but not the least in the battle is MyTown, engaging users effectively.

It's beyond doubt; if being featured in the App store will make or break the app developer's efforts to succeed or not - it will obviously! Up till now the two foremost nominees Foursquare and Gowalla are already leveraging their businesses from Apple's ability to locate the best niche in App Store.

The top most iPhone app in what's hot? Foursquare is most likely to engage almost 100,000 new users in just 10 days after being featured in the App store. This type of growth may actually continue as long as Apple keeps featuring the app.

Apple's New Ad Grabs One of Rock's Best Songs

There's a new Apple ad. It's for the iPhone 5c. No need to say much.

But since you are still here, here's the source file for the ad's soundtrack, via Sleigh Bells' 2010 "Rill Rill":

Still here? All right! Now things get really good, because you get to hear the source file for "Rill Rill," courtesy of Funkadelic. For some reason, this 1971 song got renewed life in the last few years.* Which is great, because it's one of the best songs ever:

Ah. Okay. Denouement time. Here's the ad Apple ran another time it took a thing that was popular and made it available in different colors:

      * Probably because of Sleigh Bells, I guess? But it showed up on a lot of TV and movie soundtracks.

Apple Offers Legacy Apps for Old iPhones and iPads

      last_compatible_app

      9to5Mac

When it debuts tomorrow, iOS 7 - the next generation of Apple's mobile operating system - will support only the iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and the fifth-generation iPod touch. But it's not abandoning the older devices that can't run the new platform.

Apple this week updated its App Store to allow users running older versions of iOS to install legacy versions of apps that are compatible with them. Now, when you attempt to download an app that's no longer supported by your current firmware, instead of getting a "this requires iOS 7 prompt, the device offers to download the "last compatible version" of that app.

Great news for owners of older iPhones and iPads, which will now see the lifespan of those devices extended. Good news for developers, too; now they don't have to worry much about excluding older devices. And a savvy marketing move for Apple, which by rolling out this "last compatible version" feature is offering its customers the assurance that their devices can continue to run their favorite apps even after they've aged out of the latest iOS update.

Update: Okay. Maybe not as great news for developers as I'd thought.

How to Launch a New Photo App: Wait for iOS 7 Launch, Try to Get Featured. Then Hope.

      memoir

Another new photo-sharing app? In 2013? Really?

Yup, really. But say this for the team behind Memoir, which is launching today: While sharing photos is a component of what their app does, it's not solely a photo-sharing app. It's more of a photo-storage and filing service, with ambitions to move someday beyond photos into other personal data.

Which is good, because it sure seems like the photo-sharing app space is full up, though people are still trying to prove otherwise.

Memoir was co-founded by Lee Hoffman and Angela Kim, and is a pivot out of Veri, a TechStars education startup they launched in 2011. They raised $1.2 million for that project from backers including BetaWorks and SV Angel, and used much of that to move into Memoir; they're also finishing a new funding round.

You can get a sense of what they're trying to do with Memoir in the video below, but if you want a very short sentence, it would be: TimeHop mashed up with Photo Stream.

More sentences: Memoir checks the metadata for pictures you have on your phone, plus those you upload to Facebook and other services (if you let it), and organizes them by date and location; it will also try to figure out who you were with when you took the photo. Then it stores all the images on its servers, and lets you access them whenever you want; it assumes your photos are private, and will only share them with friends if you ask.

The service is free now, and the company hopes to introduce a freemium model that will give you access to goodies like higher-resolution images, etc. One day, Hoffman and Kim can see Memoir storing and filing things that aren't photos.

For now, they're just hoping to pick up some momentum from today's Apple's iOS 7 launch.

They've held the launch of their app until this afternoon, with Apple's encouragement, in the hope that they get featured in Apple's App Store. There's no guarantee that they'll get that attention, and even if they do, a feature slot at the App Store is no guarantee of success.

But it sure would be nice to show up today, when lots of you are going to be spending lots of time there.

      iPhone 5 concept looks sleek

Speculations are up in the air to when the next iPhone will be released, the features it's going to have and most importantly - how it should look like. A lot of people believe that Apple will be keeping the design of the iPhone 4, while others believe that it's going to have a dramatic facelift. Antoine Brieux of NAK Studio recently came up with his own ideas of what the iPhone 5 would look like, and boy it sure looks sleek.

In some ways it reminds me of an elongated iPod Nano (due to the colored aluminum and shape of the bezel) but that isn't a bad thing since I thought the iPod Nano looked pretty good in the first place. But if the next iPhone 5 looks this good or even better - it's going to have no trouble selling (not that it would have any trouble in the first place). What do you think of this iPhone 5 concept design?
