Twitter just released a new version of its client app for Android smartphones, introducing a couple new features including support for push notifications.
If you want push alerts, you'll need to set your account up for automatic refresh mode, after which you'll be informed of any tweets headed your way by means of the Android notification bar. This has been a long time coming, and really feels like the stand-out feature of this release.
Another useful new feature, though not everyone will take advantage of it, is support for multiple Twitter accounts without having to log in and out. If you've got a personal account alongside one for your professional life, this could be pretty useful.
Though Twitter didn't feel the need to elaborate much on them, this release also reportedly includes a whole bunch of other little improvements, along with the expected collection of bugfixes. One thing we do know you can look for are some changes to update the available home screen widgets.
Twitter 2.1.0 is available for download in the Android Market now.
