HTC Confirms Job Cuts at U.S. Operations

Struggling Taiwanese phone maker HTC cut more than two dozen jobs at its U.S. offices on Friday.

The company said in a statement that the cuts were "a decisive action by HTC Corp (US) to streamline and optimize our organization and improve efficiencies after several years of aggressive growth."

HTC didn't offer details on the cuts or provide a specific number, but a source familiar with the situation said that about 30 positions were eliminated. No executives left, nor was there any significant shift in the types or amount of work being done in the U.S., according to an HTC representative.

"This is a hard decision that has direct impact on people who have contributed to the growth HTC has experienced the past several years," HTC said in its statement. "However, to achieve our long-term goals as a business and return maximum value to our shareholders, this is a necessary step to drive ongoing innovation."

After several years of strong growth, HTC has been trying to rebound from what has been a steep dropoff in sales of its smartphones. The company has also faced some turmoil at the corporate level, including the departure of several top executives.

As part of the turnaround push, HTC recently launched a new ad campaign starring Robert Downey Jr.

The job cuts were reported earlier by The Verge.

HTC Posts Quarterly Net Loss

HTC Corp. posted its first quarterly net loss since listing in 2002, as an expensive effort to revive its brand through its high-end HTC One smartphone has so far failed to boost sales.

As with former smartphone market leaders like Nokia Corp. and BlackBerry Ltd., HTC has found it difficult to hold its ground against fast-growing Samsung Electronics Co. and low-cost Chinese rivals. The Taiwanese smartphone maker previously warned it was expecting a loss for the third quarter due to high manufacturing and marketing costs for the HTC One while sales shrank.

HTC bought Google patents for indefatigable Apple fight

HTC has confirmed that it bought the Google patents it is using in its latest legal blast against Apple, describing the litigation as "an obligation" to its business, partners and customers. The company refused to tell AllThingsD exactly how much it had spent on the patents - and Google would only confirm that they had been transferred over the past two week period - but, in a statement given to SlashGear, HTC argued that it would keep returning to the courts until Apple's infringement stopped.

"HTC will continue to protect its patented inventions against infringement from Apple until such infringement stops" HTC general counsel Grace Lei said in an official statement. "We believe that we have an obligation to protect our business, our industry partners and our customers, who love using our products."

Apple, meanwhile, maintains that it's HTC, not they, who is doing all the copying. "We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours" a spokesperson said. HTC's new patent haul includes three originally acquired from Openwave Systems, two from Palm, and four from Motorola (prior to the currently-incomplete Google Motorola Mobility acquisition).

HTC Unveils the One mini: A Cheaper, Less Powerful Version of the One

HTC One mini

Responding to the call for smaller flagship-caliber smartphones, HTC is today introducing the One mini, a 4.3-inch version of its leading Android handset, the One. The physical design and onboard software remain unchanged, however HTC is aiming to price the One mini "two price points below the HTC One" and making a few downgrades en route to that goal. Among the tradeoffs you'll have to make with the One mini is a step down to a 1.4GHz dual-core processor (Snapdragon 400), 1GB of RAM, 16GB of non-expandable storage, and the loss of NFC and optical image stabilization for the camera. The One's IR blaster is also gone, however none of these alterations amount to a materially different user experience when the One mini is in your hands. HTC has cut corners, but done so intelligently enough to deliver "exactly the same experience" as on the company's current Android flagship.

HTC launches HTC One mini

Every single company would do well to release a flagship device of their own - it is not only a matter of technological achievement, but one of pride as well. After all, what is the point of tooting your trumpet if you do not have a flagship that is capable of duking it out with the best of the rest out there? HTC knows that they have a winner with the HTC One on their hands in the recent past, where it has picked up mainly rave reviews from the masses as well as the press, but still, the HTC One was unable to help HTC deliver a stellar quarter when it comes to earnings. Having said that, this has not stopped HTC from moving in the right direction, and they have just announced the HTC One mini, keeping in vein with the "mini me" theme that smartphone manufacturers, Samsung especially, just love to play with these days.

The HTC One mini is said to be HTC's ultimate 4.3" smartphone, after all, it does come with HTC BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound, all features that are available on their HTC One flagship, too. The HTC One mini would continue in the same iconic design flow of the HTC One, where you will find that the 4.3" display is easy on the eyes, while a powerful dual-core 1.4 GHz processor helps run proceedings from underneath the hood. Not only that, it will also be powered by the most recent version of the Android operating system, where it will be accompanied by HTC Sense.

Coming in Glacial Silver and Stealth Black colors, the HTC One mini boasts of a striking aluminum unibody in a slim profile, looking premium regardless of which angle you're starting it down from. Not only that, there is also HTC BoomSound, which is HTC's dual frontal stereo speakers that deliver less distortion and finer detail, and headphone lovers will love the Beats Audio integration that delivers immersive audio to the next level. It remains to be seen just how much the HTC One mini will sell for, but it is tipped to arrive in select markets from August onwards, before a global rollout in September.

Apple and HTC willing to show license agreement to Samsung, but not the royalty rate

“On Friday, Samsung’s counsel in the Apple case in California brought a motion to compel, demanding access to the newly-minted Apple-HTC license agreement that settled Apple’s first Android patent case ever,” Florian Mueller reports for FOSS Patents. “Apple has just responded on Tuesday evening local time, and Apple’s response is that Samsung’s motion is “moot” because Apple and HTC are happy to provide a redacted version, with only 33 words, which set forth the license fees HTC has to pay under the agreement, being redacted. And even the redacted version will be marked as “Highly Confidential – Attorneys’ Eyes Only”. HTC originally wanted to limit access to a maximum of two outside attorneys, but Samsung proposed the aforementioned AEO designation, and Apple and HTC accepted this.

“But Samsung’s lawyers still want access to the full, unredacted agreement, including the part on the royalty rate,” Mueller reports. “It’s obvious that HTC does not want its competitors to know about its cost structures. While HTC CEO Peter Chou said in interviews that the amounts on which the media speculated ($6-$8 per unit) were “outrageous” and not true, the world will never know the amount unless the full agreement is disclosed at some point, which is very unlikely to happen.”

More blood on Apple iPad’s touchscreen: HTC exits U.S. tablet market

“HTC has discontinued sales of tablets in the United States,” Mike Dano reports for FierceWireless. “However, a company executive said the Taiwanese handset maker could re-enter the space if it builds a tablet that could ‘make a splash.’”

“During the past two years HTC has sold three tablets in the United States: the Flyer; the WiMAX-capable Evo View 4G for Sprint Nextel; and the 10-inch, LTE-capable Jetstream through AT&T Mobility,” Dano reports. “‘It was a great learning experience for us, and they definitely met expectations,’ Gordon said of the tablets.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yeah, they learned how to liquidate inventory and, boy, were those some low expectations!

Dano reports, “He acknowledged that Apple’s iPad continues to dominate the tablet market and he said that HTC would only consider returning to the tablet space if it developed a product that could make inroads against the iPad and other tablets... HTC isn’t the only company to pull back from tablets. For example, Hewlett-Packard discontinued sales of its TouchPad tablet and LG Electronics decided this summer to put its tablet development on hold to concentrate on smartphones.”
