Samsung on Tuesday night announced the Galaxy Round, its first phone with a curved display.
The company's display unit has been showing flexible screen displays behind closed doors for a while now, but had yet to detail its plans to incorporate the technology into its own phone lines. Korean rival LG, meanwhile, said on Monday that its display unit is ready with a flexible OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display for smartphones.
The Galaxy Round packs a 5.7-inch display, and is headed first to the Korean market, where it will go on sale Thursday. The phone is initially available in a brown color; other shades are planned for the future, Samsung said. The curved shape lends itself to easier one-hand operation, Samsung said, as well as to control by tilting the device, or gathering time and other information using a "roll" effect.
A company representative said Samsung had no further details on U.S. plans.
