Apple really knows how to pick a winner. We've seen some amazing games hit the App Store every week and last week was a real treat. If you have had a chance to sit down with the game, you'll know how ethereal and peculiar it is. How far did you get before you had to Google hints?
This week, Apple gave the Editor's Choice honor to the third in a trilogy of games that has single-handedly pushed mobile gaming to its absolute maximum capabilities.
The Real Racing franchise has been making waves since the original launched on the iPhone in 2009. Firemint, the company who created the game, brought a level of realistic graphics quality to mobile gaming that was unmatched. Real Racing 2 upped the anti with even better graphics, social gaming capabilities, and Apple TV mirroring.
Real Racing 3 has graphics that will practically make your mouth drop off of your face and the new way to play multiplayer gaming is revolutionary with "Time Shift" technology. However, it is free to download, which has caused quite an uproar in the gaming community.
Once you get through about half of the first series of the game, you will have run out of gold coins and have to either pay for more or wait for services and upgrades to be complete. Additionally, you can't get into the second series without purchasing a new car. You can easily earn enough money from winning races, but it you have to admit it is not the best situation for a hardcore gamer to be stuck in.
Freemium aside, the game really is awesome. It looks fantastic, plays smooth, and even though you can't game in real-time with your friends, you can play against them whenever you feel like it through Time Shift technology. So, you don't have to send a text, "poke" a friend, or wait around until your brother puts the baby to bed if you want to prove how much better you are on the track.
There are 900 different events, including standard circuits, drag races, time elimination, and more. Players unlock new races for winning trophies. There are 9 different series with names like, V10 Global, Grand Tour, and Production Masters. Each series has its own set of challenges for a total of 26 challenges. Each challenge has a group of events with different types of races.
Admittedly, I think it was a bad idea to make this game free to download (which, incidentally is 1.8 GB in total size, so I recommend downloading it onto your computer first since the download will temporarily take up about 3 GB of space), but no matter how much you hate freemium games, you can't deny that this game is stunning to look at and amazing to play.
Download Real Racing 3 for free in the App Store today. Just be prepared to spend a lot of money once you've started playing.
