Facebook Working on Messenger App For iPad, Video Chat Feature For iPhone App

A reliable source has revealed that Facebook has tons in store for its mobile users.

Currently only available for the iPhone, Facebook Messenger is a standalone app that allows users of the world's largest social network to easily chat and interact between one another without having to use the native Facebook app.

According to 9to5Mac's sources, Facebook is bringing its Facebook Messenger app to the iPad.

While Facebook has focused on smartphones for its standalone Facebook Messenger app, the company is currently developing a version for the Apple iPad. A reliable source has provided an in-depth look at an early beta version of Facebook Messenger iPad.

The application would simply be the iPhone app optimized for the iPad's larger resolution. It would offer the same amount of features, including one-to-one messaging, group chatting, the ability to track friends by location, and push notifications that can be toggled on and off.

Some argue that the Facebook app is rather clunky in its current form with bugs and such plaguing both the iPhone and iPad versions. Facebook Messenger would be an easy way to bypass the official Facebook app. Unfortunately, whether or not the app will materialize is unknown.

Sources are unsure of a release timeframe for the iPad app or if Facebook actually plans to move passed internal-only operation, but the program is definitely being actively developed with new builds being readied often.

On the other hand, the iPhone counterpart of the Facebook Messenger application will soon be updated with a video chat feature utilizing Skype's video chat support as well as improved performance. 9to5Mac also got a chance to test the new feature:

We had a chance to try out the new Facebook Messenger for iPhone video chat feature, and performance was smooth most of the time.

With the new feature currently in its testing phase, the update is scheduled to go live sometime this summer for both iPhone and Android.
