SAAB?

Though the brand may be nearing its end, Swedish automaker SAAB will always be remembered for producing and advancing the technology of jet fighters still in use today. An ode to SAAB's rich history, this coupe concept takes inspiration (and name) from the Viggen fighter, mimicking its lines, glass cockpit canopy and overall clean design.

White House announces National Day of Civic Hacking, declares open season on government data

national day of civic hacking (official)

Publicly-available Census or Department of Energy data can be a powerful tool in the right hands, and the White House wants to help get it there. The inaugural National Day of Hacking from June 1st to June 2nd is inviting everyone, regardless of experience to come together and help "liberate open data," building software that puts the government’s meticulously-compiled facts and figures to good use. Developers could visualize data in new and interesting ways, or build frameworks that make it easier for future software to tap into it, and several federal agencies including NASA and the Department of Labor will be announcing specific challenges for hackers to tackle during the event.

Intel will stop producing its own desktop motherboards

Intel motherboard 1020 stock

The desktop PC might be dying, but it's still on life support. Now, Intel's decided to let one of its internal organs function with slightly less external involvement. Starting later this year, after the launch of its new Haswell chips, the company will stop developing new desktop motherboards. In fact, Intel plans to wind down the whole desktop motherboard business over the course of the next three years.

According to the company, there aren't any plans to abandon the desktop market just yet, as Intel will keep producing desktop processors for now, but rumor has it that future processors might be pre-soldered to OEM motherboards... which could make it difficult for enthusiasts to piece together computers of their own. "Intel remains...

I Just Controlled a Computer with My Eyeballs and It Was Amazing

We checked out Tobii last year, and it was pretty rough around the edges—just a prototype. But now the eye-control tech wizards at Tobii are back with a polished product, and I feel like I'm in Star Trek.

It's still not perfect, but once Tobii's new USB eye-scanning peripheral calibrated itself with my peepers, I was able to select whatever I looked at onscreen just by pressing the delete key. It made navigating Windows 8's interface rainbow faster than touch—just look at what you want to open, select, read, whatever—your retinas will always be faster than your fingers. It made it genuinely fun. It made it sci-fi.

I Just Controlled a Computer with My Eyeballs and It Was Amazing

But zooming through a map is the absolute best: no matter where you look, the Tobii will navigate on the fly. Starting from a view of North America in its entirety, I was able to sweep down through the east coast, zooming straight down to Gizmodo HQ as I got my visual bearings. Not only is Tobii accurate, it's fast—we were told the sensor, which mixed traditional imaging with near-field infrared scanning. This was crucial for something like maps, where a split-second change in what you're looking at matters.

Tobii is already partnering with companies like Lenovo to bake this tech directly into laptops and tablets. Later this year developers (and soon, us consumers) will be able to buy the USB stick to use on our existing rigs.

The sooner the better. There's nothing that feels like this, and even though it requires some keyboard taps to trigger, an interface that uses only your vision feels like something nearer to telepathy than anything I've encountered with tech before. Something has to make the keyboard and mouse combo obsolete, and a mix of eye-tracking and voice-recognition might just do it.

Hands-on with a Seriously Next-Level Activity Tracker

Withings little Smart Activity Tracker is, in fact, tiny but a smidge larger than the Fitbit One. It's an odd little shaped device in that it's kind of like Apple's iPod Shuffle if you've ever seen one of those before.

Most of the functions are cycled through using the button at the top but you can cycle through previous days recorded steps and the like by swiping from left to right or vice versa along the lower third of the display. As mentioned before, the SAT does not have an altimeter but a Withings spokesman told me that the technology being used to track stairs climbed is being patented.

Hands-on with a Seriously Next-Level Activity Tracker

Measuring your heart rate seems pretty simple - you simply cycle to the heart rate feature and stick your finger on the LED that's pulsing on the backside of the device.

Withings is still mum on pricing but they expect to ship the tracker by the end of Q1.

Samsung will have to unveil the device sale data- judgment by US district court

The judge of US District Court, Lucy Koh has ruled out that Samsung will have to unveil the specific device sales data for the numbers of its gadgets and denied that Korean company cannot keep that data secret. Samsung was trying to not to share this sale information but they have to as Apple has already announced the sales of $1.05 billion and they have keep on insisting to do follow up for the damages they have encountered due to the sales of Galaxy devices. Even their petition to ban Samsung Galaxy in US was denied in the jury of August 24th, 2012.Both of these companies have tried their best to not to reveal their sales and other internal business information, but Koh is sure about his decision and he has consistently denied these requested. He firmly believes that lacking in any information would become compelling reason in the case, according to a report shared by Bloomberg. Koh has allotted grant to Samsung that they can delay in publishing their sales per unit information and profitability figures for the handsets of company, however the appeal of Korean electronics giant is still pending.

Samsung was hoping that they could get permission on not sharing sales figure, but Koh has totally denied their request. This means that Samsung has to share its sales figure once again, as they have done in August for its 24 devices including Nexus S 4G and Galaxy SII, for the year 2010 to 2012.

For any company, these sales figures are entirely crucial and by opening it in front of the world will show their numbers behind curtain which will be quite interesting for the industry watchers. It will definitely reveal that how Samsung is growing in the US market.

According to Microsoft, Google is stopping them from developing a YouTube app for users of Windows Phone

Google and Microsoft are arguing now for more than a decade. Yesterday an issue was pointed out by AllThingsD that the Windows Phone lacks an app for YouTube.
Yesterday Dave Heiner, the deputy General Counsel and VP of Microsoft posted on the public policy blog of Microsoft complaining that YouTube is not supporting its mobile platform which will affect the users. Microsoft is trying since a long time to build a proper app of YouTube and has managed to develop its own app for Windows Phone devices. The news is that YouTube is not allowing Microsoft to make the same features as available to Android and iOS.Microsoft is working in collaboration with a number of developers to take their apps to Xbox live. Microsoft has also developed apps for social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to bring them on Windows Phone. But as mentioned on the blog post, Google is not allowing Microsoft to do that.Whatever the reason might be but Microsoft thinks that Google does not want the similar app to be available for Windows Phone.

According to Heiner, Microsoft is in contact with YouTube personnel since the last two years to resolve this problem for the users. He further said that, you might think that YouTube would like to offer the same great YouTube experience to Windows Phone users as it offers to other devices but last month we found out from YouTube that Google is stopping them to make this first class experience of YouTube available to Windows Phone users.

Meanwhile, Google said that YouTube can be accessed by Windows Phone users through mobile web. A spokesperson wrote to AllThingsD that the Windows Phone users can easily view the YouTube videos and they can access all features of YouTube via mobile website based on HTML5. The users can find favorite videos, search video categories and view video ratings.

Customize your iPhone, with metallic prints from Chromaluxe

I'm a fan of aluminum photos. I have a nice family portrait printed direct on aluminum and it gets great feedback. Such prints resist fading, water damage, tears, etc., so I was excited to see the Chromaluxe cases for the iPhone 5 and 4/4S.

These cases are a combination of a clear plastic bumper that contains the iPhone and a custom aluminum backplate with the photo of your choice. I had one made with a sample cover of our iPhone Life Magazine. You could make one up with your photo, business card info, and even a QR Code! Imagine just holding your iPhone up to have someone scan your contact info or business URL!

They also make cases for specific Galaxy phones.

A nice feature is you could swap out aluminum prints as desired. Maybe have one with your favorite football team and then swap in your favorite baseball team when the season arrives!

Check out their printed aluminum products, beyond iPhone cases, at http://www.chromaluxe.com.
