Wishbone Smartphone Thermometer Hits Kickstarter

wishbone-700

Any parent who has a sick infant knows that the last thing you want to do when they finally fall asleep is wake them up to check their temperature. Yet, you often end up having to do just that every few hours to be sure their temperature is under control.

A new thermometer has turned up on Kickstarter that should keep you from ever having to wake your baby again. It's called Wishbone and it is a contactless thermometer that plugs into your smartphone and works in conjunction with an app. The device connects to Android and iOS smartphones via the headphone port.

It will track body temperature, ambient temperature in a room, and the temperature of liquids. That means you can check if the formula is the right temperature without putting it on your arm. The app can even keep a record of temperature readings so you can easily compare them over time and share them with the doctor. Wishbone was seeking $20,000 and has raised over $50,000 with 28 days to go. A pledge of $33 or more will get you a Wishbone and the needed app. Shipping is expected in April 2015.

FAA tells airlines to remind flyers that checking e-cigs is a bad idea

There's currently no ban against packing e-cigarettes in your checked baggage before a flight, but the FAA seems to be convinced it's a pretty terrible idea. The FAA has sent out an alert to airline operators asking that they remind travelers that exclusively transporting e-cigs in a carry-on bag is a safer way to go for everyone involved.

Pointing to recent incidents - one plane had to be evacuated last summer when a checked e-cigarette overheated and caused a fire - the FAA notes that it's much easier to spot potential hazards if e-cigs are in the cabin and visible to flight crew and passengers alike. And if you're one for modding the components inside, you might be raising the odds of a problem in the skies. "The danger may be...

Netflix will produce four movies from the brothers behind HBO's Togetherness

Netflix is out at the Sundance Film Festival this week looking for new movies to buy up, but its first deal is actually for four movies that don't exist yet. According to Deadline, Netflix has agreed to finance four movies produced by the Duplass Brothers, two darlings of the indie world who are now going more mainstream with projects like their HBO show Togetherness. Each of the four films will reportedly get a short theatrical release before heading onto Netflix, where they'll presumably remain as exclusives. That's an atypical deal for Netflix given that it isn't a fan of release windows, but one would imagine that it hasn't agreed to very long ones.

HP Touchpad and Touchstone dock: first video look

After returning from a Vegas vacation, I found one last jackpot on my doorstep: An HP Touchpad and Touchstone wireless charging dock. Both are review units sent from HP, and the devices went on sale last week. This model is the 32 GB unit, which costs $599, while the optional Touchstone dock is an additional $79. In this video overview of the hardware, you can see similarities to Apple's iPad; although the Touchpad is thicker and weighs slightly more, it uses the same 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display as Apple's tablet.

When it comes to software, you might be reminded of Android tablets and the BlackBerry Playbook. But webOS stands on its own as well. The multi-pane email view is useful and I really like the Flipboard-like layout available in the Facebook application. Consumers interested in the Touchpad will have to make a software decision however: How long can they wait for a wide variety of third-party apps or are there enough top-tier titles to justify the Touchpad?

Facebook dials in Skype video calling

Social Network goes VoIPy

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the arrival of video chat, powered by Skype, into the social network.

Speaking via a stream that was broadcast on the Facebook Live channel, Zuckerberg's announcement was actually later than Facebook and Skype publishing the details on their respective blogs, such is Zuck's tendency to waffle on about graphs, trends and the like (he loves a good graph that boy).

Video calling will be available from within Facebook on your browser and Skype claims that it represents its "first big step on the Web".

The Skype video calling is embedded right into Facebook's UI and is an optimised version of the popular VoIP software.

There's no need to have Skype installed on your PC - simply sign into your Facebook chat and select call to video conference with your contacts straight away. It will need to download and install a plug-in first, but this is automatic and simple. You can even leave video messages if your pals aren't around to answer if you're calling them from within Skype (which already has Facebook chat integration).

And the best news is that video calling from Skype and Facebook is available now from www.facebook.com/videocalling.

As well as the video calling addition, Facebook has also added group chat and a new layout so the friends you chat with the most often are more prominent.

With Google+ offering group video chatting with Hangouts and mobile group chatting with Huddle - Facebook's announcement may have come a week too late....but it'll still be useful nevertheless; after all Google has a long way to go before it matches Facebook's 750 million users.

Browser extension brings Facebook stream to Google+

So many social networks...such little time

Developer Crossrider has released a tool that allows you to integrate your Facebook stream into the Google+ dashboard.

Whilst not quite being perfect Facebook/Google harmony, it is as close as you can currently get to unifying your split social networks under one roof. Now all we need is Twitter added into the mix and things will really get exciting.

The Google+Facebook Chrome extension was created in a day using the Crossrider developer framework. It is a clever JavaScript framework for creating quick cross browser extensions. For those who fancy giving it a go themselves and possibly integrating Twitter into Google+, read here.

Expect having to grant the application full access to your Facebook account to deliver updates, not the most secure of options admittedly, but is necessary if you want to use it. The need to constantly notify your friends, fans and public of your thoughts and feelings can now be done twofold, both on Facebook and Google+, all from one browser.

For those struggling to remove themselves from a deep Facebook addiction in order to start a new one with Google+, it looks like the chrome extension is the best option. The day will come however, when a choice between the two needs to be made. Judging by the speed that Google+ has been adopted, that day might come sooner rather than later.

iPhone 5 concept looks sleek

Speculations are up in the air to when the next iPhone will be released, the features it's going to have and most importantly - how it should look like. A lot of people believe that Apple will be keeping the design of the iPhone 4, while others believe that it's going to have a dramatic facelift. Antoine Brieux of NAK Studio recently came up with his own ideas of what the iPhone 5 would look like, and boy it sure looks sleek.

In some ways it reminds me of an elongated iPod Nano (due to the colored aluminum and shape of the bezel) but that isn't a bad thing since I thought the iPod Nano looked pretty good in the first place. But if the next iPhone 5 looks this good or even better - it's going to have no trouble selling (not that it would have any trouble in the first place). What do you think of this iPhone 5 concept design?

Twitter For Android Gets Push Notifications, Multiple Accounts

Twitter just released a new version of its client app for Android smartphones, introducing a couple new features including support for push notifications.

If you want push alerts, you'll need to set your account up for automatic refresh mode, after which you'll be informed of any tweets headed your way by means of the Android notification bar. This has been a long time coming, and really feels like the stand-out feature of this release.

Another useful new feature, though not everyone will take advantage of it, is support for multiple Twitter accounts without having to log in and out. If you've got a personal account alongside one for your professional life, this could be pretty useful.

Though Twitter didn't feel the need to elaborate much on them, this release also reportedly includes a whole bunch of other little improvements, along with the expected collection of bugfixes. One thing we do know you can look for are some changes to update the available home screen widgets.

Twitter 2.1.0 is available for download in the Android Market now.

Concept – iCool by Alexey Dmitriev

We are trying make our fridges more functional and more attractive by using magnets. Pretty soon touchscreens will be so cheap that it will be easy and inexpensive to make a screen of any size.

A regular refrigerator should have a touchscreen the size of its door. Nowadays it is fairly easy to put a computer into a refrigerator. Systems like Android or a special Apple program allows to put widgets on a fridge's screen. Widgets are available for downloading or buying. The fridge will carry the name "iCool" or "CoolWidget"

concept Fridge

The screen turns on as soon as someone appears in the kitchen and it recognizes the individual using a special built-in camera. A fridge can and should interact with a person: it will make your favorite coffee, turn on a radio or TV, suggest a recipe, etc.
A user can leave a note or put a virtual magnet from Rome. It all depends on the imagination of the widget developers' and a user

Now you Can Make Any Pair of Gloves Touch Screen Ready

Nanotips 4

Winter has traditionally is a tough time to use your iPhone or iPad outside while using gloves or mittens. This week, we focus on a product that will make it possible for you to make DIY touch screen items out of just about anything, no sewing required.

Last year, we told you how to make your own touch screen gloves using conductive thread. The DIY sewing project is great, if you know how to sew and use knit gloves. But, what if you want to wear leather gloves, or snow gloves, or even thick construction gloves?

Nanotips 2

Tony Yu asked the same question. So, he developed a liquid solution using Nanotechnology that would allow you to "paint" a conductive polyamide solution right onto the tips of whatever you want so you can turn your favorite gloves into touch screen capable ones.

The product is called Nanotips and it magically turns any fabric into a touch ready stylus. The conductive polyamide solution mimics the touch of human skin and has been specifically designed to last, even under hard-working circumstances.

Nanotips 3

Nanotips comes in two different colors, which actually represents two different strengths. Nanotips Blue is designed to only work with fabric. The interlinked nanoparticles soak into the material, creating a conductive chain that bridges the gap between your finger and the touch screen device. The solution dries to a transparent blue shade that is nearly undetectable on even light colored gloves.

If you don't care about the color and need the solution for glove types thicker than knit or thin fabric, you'll want Nanotips Black. This stronger solution disperses the nanoparticles to form a grid-like film on the surface of the material, creating a conductive channel on the fingertip of the glove. This stronger solution does not dry translucent, so keep that in mind when deciding which gloves to apply it to. The black coating will be visible if your gloves are not black.

All you have to do is paint the solution onto the fingertips of your gloves. Ideally, you would only apply it to your first finger and thumb, since those are the digits traditionally used on touch screen devices. However, you could paint your whole glove black if you really wanted to. From the demonstration on the site, you could even paint a pen with it and use it as a touch screen stylus.

Nanotips Blue comes with approximately 15 fingertip application. Nanotips Black is stronger and needs less coverage. Therefore can cover about 30 fingertip applications.

Visit the Nanotips website to order your own solution and you'll be making your own DIY touch screen gloves to last all winter.
