Fitbit One

Fitbit One

Fitbit One is a super-smart pedometer that tracks how many steps you take in a day, the flights of stairs you climb, the distance you travel, the number of calories you burn, and even how much restful sleep you get. In other words, it automates the hard work of keeping track of your overall fitness, and uploads the data to an excellent companion Web account where you can add even more information, like what you've eaten, as well as other activities that the Fitbit can't track on its own, like lifting weights and cycling. Why You Shouldn’t Have ‘Education’ at the Top of Your Resume

A Proper Resume

Resumes? Who needs them?!

That's the thinking of folks at LinkedIn, who recently announced you can use the professional network to apply for jobs - and you don't even need a resume.

Now, fire off a job application using your LinkedIn profile (click 'Apply Now' on this job to see it in action). Sounds pretty nice if you're applying in a hurry.

For all other scenarios, your resume still matters. Heather Huhman of job resource Come Recommended says you could be super creative and make a resume that looks like an Amazon product description.

Want an easier way to get noticed? Move Education to the bottom of your resume and Work Experience to the top. The strategy has everything to do with our economy today and will make your resume more effective time and again.

You Are More Than a Degree

If you begin your resume with 'Education,' you sacrifice coveted space to, frankly, the least interesting part of your bio.

Then, the employer looks up from your piece of paper and says, "OK, so what do you know how to do?"

We are entrenched in a skills-based economy, and what really counts are your abilities. It doesn't matter if you learned them at college, an internship, a full-time job or while babysitting your neighbor's kids.

Skills. Skills. Skills.

Employers want 'em, and your resume must quickly prove you got 'em.

The challenge in this hyper-ADD, 6-second Vine, 140-character tweet social universe is to immediately convince someone of your 'specific contribution,' as columnist Thomas Friedman calls it.

Start With the Best Stuff

In journalism, it's called the 'lead' (or 'lede' if you want to be fancy about it). The 'lead' here is your current job and the most compelling duties or accomplishments you have mastered to date.

If you only have internships and not a 'real job,' it's OK to start with those positions, too. Be detailed about the work you did and let your experience - not your college - describe you. Bosses don't care where your skills come from - only that you have them.

If an employer has to scan the page to find the goods (the 'skills'), then you have effectively 'buried the lead.' That's a journalism (and employment) no-no.

Don't worry. The employer will locate your college and degree(s) at the bottom of the resume. Just realize that a diploma alone won't make you different. Whether it's a two-year associate's, four-year bachelor's or online coursework, plenty of people have graduated from somewhere.

You know what no one else can claim? Your diverse range of talents.

Crack open your resume right now and place Work Experience at the top. In today's job market, your skills are the greatest thing you got.

How else can we spruce up our resumes? Share below!

Parents of Sandy Hook victim search for the genetics of violence

Shutterstock_61775431_large

Genetic data can reveal risks of cancer and other illnesses, so why can't it also tell if someone is prone to violent behavior? The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports on the efforts of Jeremy Richman and Jennifer Hensel in starting The Avielle Foundation, which hopes to determine just that. The couple began the organization in remembrance of their daughter Avielle, who died in the Sandy Hook shooting — and they intend to fund research into biological triggers that could predict violent outbreaks before they happen. But some are skeptical of the research: though Richman and Hensel view it as a way to help people with aggressive behavior, no one's certain of what would become of a person found to carry a dangerous trait for violence.

Ubisoft says the only games worth making are blockbuster franchises

Ubisoft_large

Ubisoft is only interested in releasing video games that can be developed into successful (and lucrative) franchises. Tony Key, the publisher's VP of sales and marketing, made that message abundantly clear in a recent interview with A List Daily. "That's what all our games are about; we won't even start if we don't think we can build a franchise out of it," Key said. "There's no more fire and forget — it's too expensive." Key had been discussing the massive promotional muscle that Ubisoft had put behind Assassin's Creed 3, and expressed hope that Watch Dogs (bound for next-gen consoles this fall) has the makings of another multi-release saga. The publisher is feeling confident it's on the right path, but Keys says, "until we're the...

New Apple TV service would reportedly include ad-skipping technology

Appletv_lead_large

Rumors have circulated about a future Apple TV that goes beyond what the company's current set-top box offers for years. While most of that speculation has focused on a full-on TV set, we're hearing some rumblings now about what the user experience might be like. According to former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin, Apple's next TV service will include some ad-skipping technology — much like the controversial Dish Hopper DVR. Lessin reports that talks with networks and cable companies have been going on in "fits and starts" for over a year, but talks have gotten more serious in recent discussions.

This ad-skipping technology would reportedly only show up in a "premium" version of the product — consumers would pay Apple,...

Mysteries of 'obesity gene' revealed, could yield new ways to fight hunger

4301527254_f387357fff_z_large

An obesity gene that affects one in every six people could be partially treated thanks to a new study that's finally determined how it works. Researchers led by Rachel Batterham at University College London were looking into an obesity gene, known as FTO, and found that it caused people with a specific variation of it to maintain higher levels of ghrelin, a hunger-stimulating hormone, throughout their system. In people without the gene variation, ghrelin levels dropped after a meal — but in people with the specific gene variant, ghrelin levels remained high even after eating, keeping them hungry.

And it would heed that call.

Oculus CEO thinks VR headsets could eventually be free with subsidies

Ellisoculus_4_large

At $300, the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset isn’t exactly breaking the bank. (Especially compared to alternatives from more established companies.) But CEO Brendan Iribe wants to get it lower still — possibly even free, if he can find the right business model. Speaking to Edge, Iribe said, "let’s say there was some game you played in VR that everybody loved and everybody played and we made $100 a month – or even $10 a month – at some point the hardware’s cheap enough and we’re making enough that we could be giving away the headset."

With companies like Microsoft and Sony selling consoles cheaply and making up their investments in software licensing, Iribe thinks there’s room in the industry for some more inventive...

Leaked Verizon plan would let you upgrade phones after paying off half of your current one

Dsc_5020_large

According to a leaked Verizon document posted by Droid Life, the company could be launching a new plan called VZ Edge to let people with an insatiable appetite for the newest phones upgrade hardware faster than ever before. Although Verizon's upgrade cycle sits at 24 months for customers with traditional, subsidized phones, the company does let customers pay full retail price for their devices, spread out over 12 months. Under this new plan, said to be unveiled on August 25th, a customer would reportedly be able to upgrade after paying off just 50 percent of his or her current phone.

The plan sounds almost exactly like T-Mobile’s new Jump approach to pricing, which lets you swap your old phone for a new one up to twice a year, nixing...

A Geeky Review- Tomb Raider

Every once in a while a game comes along that completely reaffirms my love of gaming. The recent reboot of Tomb Raider is one of those games. I had expected great things from Lara Croft‘s “rebirth” but what I got was quite a lot more awesome than I had planned. Tomb Raider is a near perfect game from start to finish and will leave you wanting more from our heroine, Lara, who finally got the game she deserves.

Through the years I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the Tomb Raider franchise. Being a female myself I was instantly smitten with the idea of controlling an intelligent female protagonist. Despite her extremely short-shorts and well endowed chest, Lara had credibility as a dual gun wielding action/adventurer who became an icon in the “boys club” of memorable video game characters. Unfortunately for Lara, she was always kind of one-dimensional and through the years lacked character development and was slowly forgotten as her male counterparts progressed and became multi-dimensional.

As we moved into the current generation of consoles I hadn’t given Lara much thought, that is until I started playing Uncharted Drake’s Fortune. Not only did I think, this is the game Tomb Raider should have become, Uncharted finally succeeded in giving me the female video game character I’ve been seeking. While Elena Fisher is not Uncharted’s lead, she has become as beloved as our hero and main man Drake. All of Uncharted’s characters were created with love and depth as was the gripping cinematic quality to the franchises stories. I largely credit this with Naughty Dog’s, Amy Hennig, who is the main creative director and writer to the Uncharted series.

Amy Hennig is a legend in the games industry and previously worked for, Crystal Dynamics. As you may or may not know Crystal Dynamics took over development of the Tomb Raider franchise in 2003 and are also responsible for the current reboot of Tomb Raider. At one point during her time at Crystal Dynamics, Hennig wanted to reboot Tomb Raider but the task was given to someone else. Hennig eventually left Crystal Dynamics and joined Naughty Dog, and a legendary series was born. In a recent interview Hennig has stated that she was disappointed she didn’t get the opportunity to revive Tomb Raider. However, I feel Ms. Hennig is largely responsible for Lara’s growth as its apparent Crystal Dynamics took more than a few pointers from her groundbreaking Uncharted series.

When we first meet the new Lara Croft, we find a young woman and recent archeology graduate about to embark on her first expedition to the Yamatai island in the Dragon’s Triangle which is off the coast of Japan. It’s here that an unsure girl will be forced to overcome a bevy of trials and tribulations that will mold Lara into the iconic heroine the character has earned.

Lara and her crew set off to explore the mysterious Yamatai and the legend of its queen known as Himiko or “Sun Queen”. Legend has it Himiko had shamanistic powers in which she could control the weather. A storm is what sets off events of the adventure which leaves the crew torn apart and stranded on the strange island that is inhabited by the Solari Brotherhood, a dangerous and violent cult. Throughout Tomb Raider’s campaign an interesting and well written story unfolds but I would be doing you a disservice to elaborate on events that are responsible in transforming a young Lara who is unsure of herself into a fledgling hero, poised to take the reigns of the Tomb Raider franchise.

Not only does Lara’s character develop throughout the game, her abilities are honed as well. Early on, when you are required to walk across a narrow beam, Lara is cautious and almost clumsy about it, but later she expertly finds herself able to cross similar scenarios with ease and confidence. When Lara is forced to kill for the first time, it’s an emotional moment you won’t forget and expertly conveyed by Lara’s voice actor, Camilla Ludington.

Initially I played Tomb Raider on the 360, but I recently scored a free PC copy through a promotion with AMD Radeon when I replaced my video card with one of theirs. The graphics of the 360 version looks great but the PC version is stunningly beautiful. AMD created a cool little feature for the PC version called TressFX Hair, and let me tell you Lara’s hair looks fabulous! If you have a rig that will run Tomb Raider on Ultra settings, I highly recommend the PC version. However if you are interested in the multiplayer portion I’d go with a console version as the PC community seems to have less interest in MP for this game than console fans do.

Speaking of MP I’ve mostly enjoyed it, which is a good thing as it was recently announced that for now, any planned DLC for Tomb Raider will be Multiplayer based. I do so hope Crystal Dynamics changes their mind on this because I would love some more single player Tomb Raider even if it’s just a few new tombs to explore.

Tomb Raider is available now for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. It was developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. I can’t recommend this game enough, it is truly an epic experience. Look out The Last Of Us and Bioshock Infinite, a “contender is born”.

The Walking Dead Returns with “The Suicide King”

The Walking Dead Escape with Merle

Warning, this article contains spoilers! You have been warned.

The Walking Dead was only halfway through season 3 when it left us wondering what would happen to Merle and Daryl after they were labeled terrorists. A lot of what happened at Woodbury was a little confusing and disappointing, but the prison offered many interesting moments.

Rick and the gang still had enough bullets and smoke grenades to rescue Daryl and, to no ones satisfaction, Merle. Merle actually helps them escape by helping them get through the fence. Despite Merle's help, Rick knew that bringing him along would probably end in disaster, especially after the special treatment Glenn and Maggie received. Merle, seeing that the group won't take him, decided to leave. Daryl, not wanting to lose his brother, sticks with Merle. Not even his worries for Carol could stop him.

The people in Woodbury act like scarred sheep. They cheer when they are told to cheer and the slightest scare sends them running. What happens when the town is attacked by an unknown number of people with guns and grenades? The people want to leave the town, unaware of how many zombies or other people with guns could be outside. It would have made more sense if they tried to overthrow the Governor. Then, when a small group of zombies break in, a lot of people just stand around staring as Andrea kills the zombies and the Governor walks in and walks back out just to kill a bitten victim. After Sophia died, I realized I did not care for anyone in the camp but the Governor, Andrea, or Milton. The best anyone else does is provide comedic relieve like Carjulio with his ridiculous name and the way he was handled by Merle.

Back at the prison, Tyreese and his sister Sasha are trying to make a good impression, while Ben and Allen apparently want to kill everyone and take the prison. They even discuss attacking Carol and Carl while they are guarding the supplies. It was a little unsettling that right after that debate, Hershel brings the group weapons, which Tyreese and Sasha quickly grabbed.

It seems every single character needs to have some sort of personal drama. A lot of it is understandable. Carol and Daryl both have to deal with Daryl leaving the group. Tyreese and Sasha are struggling to keep Ben and Allen in line. Andrea and Milton are doing their best at Woodbury. Glenn is becoming increasingly more aggressive after each ordeal. Rick is probably suffering more than anyone with his constant illusions. All it took was a silhouette of Lori before he started scaring everyone in the room while screaming at nothing. The characters that I found behaving strangely were Maggie and Beth. Maggie ended up walking out of Woodbury in relatively good condition, yet she was behaving like she received a worst beating than Glenn. Beth has a prisoner thinking about her, Carl staring at her constantly, and Ben and Allen could easily jump on that wagon. Even so, when Rick returns, she gives him a kiss on the cheek and some very alluring glances. Hershel seems to have the least worries of them all and he is missing a leg.

There was a familiar moment when Axel found out about Oscar's death. He started talking about how good of a friend Oscar was, similar to when Glenn talked about T-dog trying to save the homeless. It was almost like they were comparing Oscar, a criminal, to T-dog, an upright citizen. I found this moment unnecessary and hope Oscar is never mentioned again. Mentioning Oscar only reminds us that he was T-dog's replacement right before being replaced by Tyreese.

I know Michonne didn't offer much, but she can always redeem herself with a good zombie group massacre. Milton seems to be holding things together as best he can, but will his experiments continue. He was clearly experimenting on zombies for the sake of Penny, but now that zombie Penny is dead, will the Governor deem him unnecessary? I'm a little curious what the Governor has been up to. He will walk out of a building and walk into a building, but nothing is telling us what he is doing off-screen. It isn't too far-fetched if he dresses up Penny like a doll and still tries to take care of her.

The people of Woodbury are what ultimately bring down this episode, but everything else makes us wonder how things will play out. I give The Walking Dead: "The Suicide King" a 7 out of 10.
